Tips & Tricks
This game is the only one of the Mega Man series (except Rockman & Forte) where energy tanks are not an option. And so your strategy must be a more defensive one. Rather than going all out on a rampage trying to destroy your enemy, sit back avoiding shots and fire when you see an opening.
Be careful in the section between the "gates" right before the bosses. There are enemies there that can wear you down before the bosses but can also help you with some power-ups.
I always find it useless to use weapons during the stages themselves unless absolutely necessary. Save them up for the bosses!
Boss Order and Strategy
Bomb Man
Stage: Use your defensive skills to avoid most enemies in this stage (especially the exploding bullets). Only shoot what shoots back at you and keep an eye out for the pits and spikes. Don't miss the easy 1-up at the end of the stage. Stand at the mouth of the opening above the ledge and shoot the Sniper Joe when he jumps. Then simply walk in for the freebie!
Boss: Bomb Man has a very simple pattern. He'll jump once or twice across the room. Make sure you're on the other side. Most of the time, he'll then throw three bombs at you. If you're far enough away, the first won't touch. Just keep firing. With the second and third, try to time your jump so the blast won't cause any harm. And his pattern will repeat. Just avoid his bombs and you'll have an easy victory.
Guts Man
Stage: This is another very active stage where timing is critical. The moving lifts can be a hassle if your timing isn't down along with the flying enemies and hammers from the worker robots. Keep moving to avoid enemies and shoot them down every time you get the opportunity.
Boss: You'll quickly notice that Guts Man likes to jump around a lot. Whatever you do, be in the air when he lands. Then you'll be able to try to dodge the blocks of rock he throws at you. Three bombs should do the trick easily. Just stay on the ledge and toss them over. Jump up and toss the bomb if Guts Man is on the far side of the screen.
Cut Man
Stage: This is a relatively easy stage. Just one thing to mention. Those things that fly at you that look like upside-bowls with a prop on top can be annoying. There are two ways to rid of them. One: shoot them down when they swoop down to you (timing, timing, timing). Two: if they're behind Mega Man, try to keep running until they fall off the screen.
Boss: See those two blocks in the room? That's all you need to defeat Cut Man. He jumps rather high, so hit him with the blocks on his way down, or else he'll dodge them. Later on you'll face him without this option, though. There, you'll have to dodge his jumping and cut blade. Use either the P-cannon or Fire Man's weapon then.
Elec Man
Stage: This is the first stage that introduces the use of the disappearing and reappearing blocks. Watch the pattern once or twice before moving on. You should then be able to better anticipate your moves. On the section with the long ladders moving up, time your shots so that you hit the enemy before it fires. If it does, try to position yourself between the two bursts. When the ladder splits into two directions, take the right one. It's easier to avoid the electrical charges than the enemies. If you must, use Cut Man's weapon to destroy the robots that glide on the ground. Don't miss the blue "M-Adapter" behind a block towards the end of the stage.
Boss: When you get into the room, quickly jump up to ledge on the left. Elec Man will either shoot his weapon at you or jump at you. If he shoots, jump out of the way, but you have to be quick! If he jumps, fire Cut Man's weapon to fend him off. Three shots will destroy him.
Ice Man
Stage: Of the first six stages, I hate this one the most. Try to keep moving in one direction or you'll have to deal with the ice. Jump before you start running to get a head start. Again, watch the disappearing blocks before you attempt it to better your chances. It's a lot harder than the ones in Elec Man's stage. When you reach the moving platforms, be patient! If you try to rush things, you'll hit one of those penguin missiles and/or fall off.
Boss: This battle usually will end in about five seconds. Fire three of Elec Man's weapon at him to defeat him. He'll shoot out some "isicles" at you, but they move real slow. They are hard to dodge if low to the ground as you have to perfect your jumping skills. But half of the time they will go over your head.
Fire Man
Stage: This stage can get rather tricky. Shoot the bullets at a faraway distance so that the blasts won't get to you. When crossing gaps over the fire pits, make sure there aren't any flames that will come up. Wait until they have before you go. Once again, timing is essential when you have to go through the flame throwers.
Boss: Contrary to my comment of being defensive towards enemies, this battle is an all out brawl. Fire Man will send a barrage of flames towards you as he stays on the ground. Since you can't stay in the air, it is necessary to get hit. Hit him 7 times with Ice Man's weapon and he'll go down in smoke (excuse the pun).
Dr. Wily Stages
Stage 1
Stage: The beginning is tough. You basically have to guess when going under the big "hoppers" and get by at least once. They're too tough to destroy before they reach you. Freeze the flame throwers when they are down to get by easily. Again, be patient on the moving platforms and destroy the bullets from long range.
Boss: Rock Monster. The rock monster uses the same pattern when going back and forth on the screen. If you get that down, he shouldn't be a problem. Use Elec Man's weapon. If you still can't defeat him, repeatedly pause the game as the electric bolt passes through his eye to get multiple hits in one shot.
Stage 2
Stage: This stage is reminiscent of Bomb Man's where the bombs come out of the pits to blast you. Dodge these and shoot down the enemies quickly as they'll get to you in a hurry. Don't forget to use your "M-Adapter" to get to some easy power-ups. You will also encounter Cut and Elec Man again.
Boss: Mega Man Clone. You'll want to come into this battle with full energy if possible. This will be another bruiser, but tougher than Fire Man. The clone will jump on the other side of the room and fire the weapon you possess. I like to use Fire or Elec, although anything's game. Either way, it takes 14 shots. You really have no other choice but to jump over his shots and keep firing back.
Stage 3
Stage: This is a very short stage that requires quick reactions. There'll be parts where you drop into an enemy's path. Quickly dodge them and move on. Once you reach the final tube where the water is pushing you, sit back and keep firing to destroy easy targets.
Boss: The boss here is a series of seven bubbles that roll around the room. There are four blocks in the middle of the room for your enjoyment but save them for the last four. The bubbles will continually get faster with each one. Shoot the first three with your cannon and then use Guts Man's capabilities for the rest. Shouldn't be a problem as long as you stay out of their way. They do not fire at you with anything.
Stage 4
Stage: This stage will force you to use your jumping skills, especially with the moving platform. The "M-Adapter" is a must and a very useful tool. Just ignore that weird looking thing at the end of the platform. It can be rather difficult to reach and only gives you 100,000 points, which in my mind is useless. You will then reach the four remaining bosses of the original six.
Boss: Dr. Wily. His first state is fairly simple. He fires some small balls at you that are easily avoided. Use Fire Man's weapon to take him out. When he revives into his second form, it's a little more tricky. Try to jump over the revolving balls when they're closest to the ground. Avoiding them on the return is yet more tricky and I'll leave it up to you to develop a technique for that. No weapon stands out against the rest, but I use Cut Man's because of its simplicity and that it doesn't take much weapon energy. Use the same pause cheat as with the Rock Monster if you're still having trouble.
