Directions Q 11-15: Read the following passage and answer the questions given below it, in the context of the passage.
Happiness to a certain extent can be regarded as a lack of desire: or more appropriately, as lack of the kind of desire which cannot be fulfilled. A pig, for instance, easily attains happiness because his chief desire is to swill, and usually he can do so.
In human beings the process is more difficult because human desires are both more numerous and more complex than those of the pig and more often impossible to satisfy. Further, people are frequently happier while working towards a coveted goal than they are, once the goal is achieved. So lack of unfulfilled, or unfulfillable desire the state we call contentment is not the whole story.
Apparently a certain amount of nascent desire, of expectation, plays its part in the happiness pattern. This is in line with the psychological concept of the human being as a stimulusresponse machine. When exposed to the stimulus, say, of a porterhouse steak, a hungry man responds with eager eye and watering mouth. He has one desire at the moment, and is happy in the expectation of its easy satisfaction. If inhibited by anxiety about digestion, he would not be so happy. But not being thus repressed, he advances an ardent fork, pokes a morsel into his mouth, and experiences pleasure technically, the satisfying of want, the sensation of appropriate response to a given stimulus. And when the steak is devoured, having no further desire, he is momentarily content.
But contentment vanishes swiftly, and with it some portion of happiness. For it is a psychological axiom that every response is itself a stimulus, and calls for a new response. The man full of steak now craves a bicarbonate of soda.
11. For a person to find happiness
a) A certain amount of expectation is necessary
b) There should be no desires
c) The desires should be more complex than a pigs desires.
d) The stimulus-response mechanism must be conditioned.
12. Unhappiness in a hungry man faced with a steak is caused by
a) Poverty
b) Anxiety
c) Vegetarianism
d) Momentary desire
13. People cannot attain happiness as easily as pigs because
a) They do not eat swill
b) They have problems of indigestion
c) Each response generates a new stimulus
d) Their desires are more in number than the pigs.
14. Which of the following statements can be inferred on the basis of the passage?
a) Human beings are complex personalities
b) Pigs are the happiest animals.
c) The human being is psychologically thought of as a stimulus response machine
d) Achieving a goal is the ultimate happiness.
15. A hurdle in the path of human search for happiness is
a) Lack of unfilled desire.
b) Lack of goal in life.
c) The complexity and quantity of desires.
d) Expectation of easy satisfaction.
Directions Q 16-19: Read the following passages and answer the questions that follow.
We are living in a time of great and continuing changes. The most obvious feature of the modern world is the enormous development of science and technology. This has given man a deeper understanding of Nature, so that there is a possibility of providing a good life to every human being.
These great changes have resulted from a number of factors which are characteristic of the modern age. The first is the tremendous growth of science due to the emphasis placed on it in education, and due to the immense investment that all modern nations are making in scientific research. Secondly, this development of science is being continuously applied to improve technology which, in its turn, has revolutionised agriculture, created modern industry, and transformed all services like transport, communication, education, health and housing. The wealth, power and standard of living of a nation therefore now depend directly on its command over science and technology. Thirdly the new technology is itself leading to greater progress in science; thus there is now a `circle of progress, where advances in science lead to improvements in technology, which, in their turn, lead to still further advances in science. Scientific knowledge is therefore growing at a tremendous rate at present and is being doubled about every ten years. The obsolescence of knowledge is now so rapid that, in the opinion of Dr. D.S. Kothari, a modern university degree, like a passport, should be valid only for a period of five years. Fourthly, this tremendous rate of growth of scientific knowledge and technology has led, in turn, to rapid changes in modern societies, which have become science-based. In ancient and medieval times, the rate of social change was so slow that the knowledge a person acquired lasted him or her throughout his or her life, and was good enough for one or more later generations too. But today, changes in life-styles are so rapid that every individual has to keep learning all his life; he may also have to change his vocation every few years. The modern age of science and technology has, like many other things, brought great advantages and also created immense problems.
