LETTER TO THE EDITOR - October, 2007
Election day is quickly approaching. It's imperative that voters know who they are really voting for before making final choices at the polls.
Kevin Corcoran (R), attorney for Bob Schmitt Homes, is running for an at-large council seat. Mr. Corcoran presented the preliminary plan for the nursing home proposed by Bagley Lorain Properties LLC (owned by Bob Schmitt Homes). Mr. Corcoran admits that certain requirements have not been met, but Planning Commission approved the proposal anyway. Can Mr. Corcoran be trusted to make the best possible, unbiased decisions for our city or will he be inclined to make more exceptions for special interests? He has stated he'll excuse himself from voting on conflicts. That would then leave us without adequate representation.
Consider, too, that the mayor appoints members to the Zoning Board and Planning Commission. These committees review proposals for building and rezoning and send their recommendations on to council. Many of these members also have ties to special interests (refer to http://www.maxpages.com/minnickward4). The mayor appoints the law director who, according to our Charter, "holds office at the pleasure of the mayor." Since the mayor's office and council are separate entities, conflicts can arise when unbiased legal opinions are needed.
I am a life-long Republican. I have volunteered many years to community service and served on city council for two terms (1998-2001). Special interest influence in our city continues to be great. They may help our present mayor and other candidates with negative campaign literature. Election laws are not always followed or enforced. Don't be fooled or misled!
For mayor, I recommend Anthony NICI (D), keeping Bernadine BUTKOWSKI (R) at-large, Nancy BUESCHER (R) Ward 1, Dennis BOOSE (D) Ward 2, Ray McLAUGHLIN III (D) and Rick WINROD (D) for at-large seats. Dick BRENT (D) Ward 3 and write-in candidate Robert CHAPEK (D) Ward 4 are good choices. The candidates I endorse will provide a blend of Republicans and Democrats with less likelihood of voting along party lines. I believe these candidates are honest and committed to serving our residents to the best of their abilities and can be trusted with upholding our laws and ordinances rather than giving preferential treatment to special interests.
