In a secluded area near the Magic Kingdom, sandwiched between the Magnolia and Palm golf courses, sits the Shades of Green Resort. Shades of Green was originally built as a deluxe Walt Disney World Resort and was formerly known as the Disney Inn. In February, 1994, the Department of Defense leased the resort for exclusive use by retired and active military personnel and their families, members of the reserves and the National Guard, as well as Department of Defense civilians. The name, "Shades of Green" signifies the camouflage uniforms worn by the armed forces without singling out any one particular branch. The resort is fully self-supporting and operates with non-appropriated funds. All profits are turned back into the resort for improvements to the accommodations and services.
The Shades of Green resembles a country inn with rock walls in the lobby and lots of windows to enjoy the picturesque views of the golf courses and pool areas. The distant whistle of the train at the Magic Kingdom serves as a reminder that you are indeed in Walt Disney World and not in some remote forest area.
While the Shades of Green is no longer a Walt Disney World Resort, many of the benefits extended to Walt Disney World resorts guests, are also given to the guests of the Shades of Green. Priority Seating arrangements, childcare, package delivery to your room, use of the WDW transportation and complimentary use of wheelchairs for use around the resort (on a first come, first serve basis), are some of the benefits extended to Shades of Green guests. However, there are some extra perks that are only available to Shades of Green guests. Discounted WDW park admission tickets are offered. This "Stars and Stripes" pass is similar to a length of stay pass, offering unlimited use of all major and minor theme parks and can be purchased from Guest Services at the Resort or the "Made in the Shade" shop, with a resort ID or confirmation card. Discounted tickets for other area attractions such as Universal Studios, Sea World, Busch Gardens, Wet 'n Wild and Church Street Station are also available at Guest Services. Ample accommodations at reduced prices, discounted Disney souvenir merchandise and reduced rates for golf are more of the advantages of being a guest at the Shades of Green. There are some minor inconveniences, however. Guests must pay for the use of the room safe and crib rentals, there is a 30 day cancellation policy in effect and guests cannot use their resort ID for purchases outside of the Shades of Green Resort.
It is important to note here, that as of October 1, 1998, the Shades of Green became a totally non-smoking resort. This is in effect throughout the entire property, indoors and out.
