THE GAME

The gameplay in Smash Brothers can best be described as a mixture between a Mario Bros. platform game and fighting. Players are restricted to a relatively small fighting arena and compete for points. Each character has a damage meter that increases when damage is taken.

Fighting is mostly handled via the two A and B Buttons (attacks vary depending which direction you press the stick in) and the R Button (grab or kick in the air).

The rules are: In each stage, you knock opponents down and take falls yourself. The score is kept, and a calculation made (shoot-downs minus falls) to determine your tally and the character with the most points is declared the winner.

You receive damage when opponents hit you, which is displayed on-screen as a percentage. The more damage you take, the more powerful and more effective attacks are against you.

As you take more damage, you become more likely to get targeted by your enemies.

GAME FEATURES
Each character possesses his/her own appropriate fighting skills and techniques. Four-character simultaneously fighting possible. Various items appear on each stage. Each item has several effects, broadening and enhancing gameplay considerably. Examples of items include: Fireflower, Striking fan, Bob-omb, Pokeball, lightsaber, DK's hammer, and more. Mystery items are central to the game and contain plenty of surprises. It's possible to play the game using just a few buttons, so it's accessible to the beginner, but will, in fact, pose a serious challenge to more experienced gamers.

GAME MODES

Select your fighters and face off against the other characters, one after another. Lose all fighters and the game is over. To win, you have to face the final boss. Along the way, you will fight single characters and teams (such as the Mario Brothers -- Mario/Luigi team, or a team of Yoshis).

Two- to four-player battle mode. In the time-limited battle mode, your personal tally of falls against strikes is weighed up against your opponent's scores. In Stock Mode battle, you play against the other players teams. In both modes you start with a damage level of 300% -- in the event of a draw, there is a sudden-death contest to determine the winner.

THE CHARACTERS

Mario: Your favorite plumber. Good for beginners.

Donkey Kong: Great for power, but slow. Good fighting techniques, too.

Link: Can launch powerful attacks with his sword. Also rather handily wields 2 other weapons to great effect: bombs and his boomerang.

Samus: Long-distance attacks and air attacks a specialty. Capable of nimble, quick moves. Can roll up in a ball and lay bombs.

Yoshi: Capable of very high jumps. Can catch hold of enemies with his tongue and change them into an egg! Can also spit you out.

Kirby: Has the ability to mimic his opponents' killer attacks. Can also fly for a short time.

Fox: Has the advantage of speed and lightning-quick mid-air attacks. Can also use his blaster to get away from, or attack, enemies.

Pikachu: Can move and turn on a dime very quickly. Can also inflict damage with his electric shock attack.

Luigi: The often neglected green brother returns for some "wahooo!"

Jigglypuff (Purin): A super-cute Pokemon with big eyes. Good for kicking...

Captain Falcon: Who, you ask? F-Zero X's super-fast racing stud, of course.

Ness: The boy from Mother (EarthBound) fights with magic, a yoyo and his trademark baseball bat.

The Stages

Here is a description on each of the 9 stages you can fight in.

Stage 1--In the sky of castle peach--You battle on two precarious platforms, one of which slowly moves from left to right. Cunningly positioned above is a bumper that can propel you to your doom. Watch where you jump.

Stage 2--The Congo Jungle--his stage features two vertically rotating platforms and a fairly wide gantry for rumble based activities. If you find yourself falling out of the play area, try to land inside the DK barrel at the bottom of the screen. So then you can shoot yourself back into the fight.

Stage 3--Castle of Hyrule--The weather will kill you in this level. Literally! Tornadoes frequently run across the screen, so be careful to avoid these at all possible. Try to knock your opponents into the tornadoes. Three small platforms give you access to a lofty advantage, but watch out for the assault from below.

Stage 4--Planet Zebes--Volcanos spew deadly lava in this level. At the beginning of the fight, make your way to the top of the level to avoid this lava. One moving Platform allows retrieval of vital power-ups.

Stage 5--Yoshi's Island--There are three clouds formations that will save your skin from other opponents if you are quick to utilize them before they vaporize.

Stage 6--Pupupu Land-Three platforms and a large fowery section of terra firma seem to be stable, but watch carefully for the large oak tree. He can blow you off the edge faster then you can say ALL-STAR DAI-RANTOU SMASH BROTHERS!

Stage 7--Aboard Great Fox--You fight on top of the great fox that appeared in Star Fox 64. Watch out for Fox's Arwing Spacecraft, as a remote control allows it to swoop into battle and randomly fire its twin lasers. You can board the Arwing, but be careful not to literally be carried away.

Stage 8--Yamabuki City-- Watch out for the service-lift entrance. When a light glows from the doorway, you release a random pocket monster to wreck havoc on all the combantants.Be carefull not to fall off its short sides.

Stage 9--Classic Mushroom Kingdom-- This level contains all piranha plants and POW blocks from the original mario and more. This level even has the mario 1 backdrop and music! Hit the POW blocks to zap other players and the two pulleys can be pulled to drop unaware idiots to there doom.
