New York Open Center

Tenth Anniversary Address

Marian Woodman

Thank you, members of the Open Center, for the
recognition that I am receiving tonight. I am truly honored
to have been a part of your developing program, and
honored to have had the opportunity, through your groups,
to meet so many people who hold the same concept of
holistic consciousness.

As I stand here tonight, I am very aware that I am between
the main course and dessert (always the sweetness is out
there someplace). But I am also very much aware of the
fact that we are at the United Nations building, and how
appropriate it is that the Open Center has chosen this
building in which to have its Anniversary celebration. Carl
Jung believed that there is no hope for our planet without
consciousness. "What is not brought to consciousness," he
said, comes to us as fate." In other words, the rage, the
fear, the grief, as well as the creative energies that we bury
in our unconscious, will one day come and stare us straight
in the eye.

And we will call that our fate. Only if we are able to bear
the pain of going into those deep areas of ourselves, and
bringing those energies to consciousness, and have the
courage to try to transform them into our own living, will
we ever be able to shift our fate, or shift our lives, as
citizens of the global village.

I think most of us here tonight are doing whatever we can
to bring consciousness to what we best understand. I have
focused my life on the forsaken feminine, that immense
energy in men and women that is speaking to us through
symptoms and true dreams. Assuring us, perhaps warning
us, that there can never be peace if we cannot honor
nature, if we do not honor our own soul in our body, if we
cannot honor Her in the living planet. Surely there can be
no wholeness until the union of the mature masculine and
the mature feminine comes about in the leaders who are
trying to bring peace.

I would just like to close with an image, a repetitive image
from a dream. Many people recognize this image, with
variations of course. In the image, there is an immense
wave coming in, to the shoreline. Light is breaking on the
horizon, and on the crest of the wave, a magnificent
chocolate-colored woman is riding in triumph, her arm
lifted as she comes into shore. Ladies and gentlemen, may
we have the courage to let go and go with the wave, into
the shore and into the dawn.

Thank you.
