With each story we always being at the start. As most of you will know, I was due to leave for Greece on the 3rd of July '99. I said my goodbyes and insulted a few people the night before, confidently thinking that I will be out of the country within the next 24 hours. Saturday morning I arrived at the airport five hours early with what looked like a bus load of relatives ready to see me off.
As I head to have my typically over weighted baggage checked in, I notice my travel agent at the airport (at that stage I thought it was considerate and strategic customer service practice to ensure that you see all your clients off, think again). At that stage the representative of my airline started calling head office (thoughts of what did my mum pack in my luggage for my relatives in Greece was running thru my mind). I was then handed back my ticket and explained that I don't have a booked seat and I will not be flying.
At that stage I was calm and I thought thank god that my travel agent was there, he can help me. I approached him and was explained that, that morning the computer at his office stated that my seat was not confirmed and I was on a stand by ticket and he will do his best to get me on that flight.
I, still calm and laughing away thinking that this could only happen to me. Two hours later when everyone had checked in and the plane was ready to go, the lady handed back my ticket and said that I will not be departing. I started to boil and demanded an explaination from the airline service. They said that my travel agent had never booked me a confirmed ticket I was always on stand by. I also found out that he purchased my ticket at a cheaper price.
I turned to my travel agent and told him that he he knew this for three months and that I demanded that he get me to Greeece, my excess luggage paid for and a first class ticket on the next flight. I also wanted my ticket personally delivered and if my demands were not met he will be made a fool of. I made him sign an agreement that he was bound by. Thankfully my dads age old obsession with the video camera paid off at that stage and their will always be a life time memory of my abusing this dwarf who I later found out has been taken to jail for doing this to other people.
And my trip to Greece bagan....
I left for Greece two days later and was honoured to be sitting next to a complusive bull shit artist that tried to convince me that she was a baby sitter for a few famous people before they were stars. When telling her that I had a village full of male cousins she exploded with joy and, her need to get married was like a ticking time bomb I knew that my nightmare began. Thankfully it soon ended after I vommitted in our complimentary blanket and the conversation mysteriously ended there....
THE BEACHES OF GREECE
Katerini...
Andrea and I decided on the first Saturday that she arrived to Greece that we should experience a beach closer to home and then head off to the Islands and Halkidiki. Katerini being close it was our mission.
We caught the morning bus of 7.15am and arrived their at about 10.30am. Before actually going to the beach we thought it was a good idea to have a look around. Much to our suprise it was confusing as to why a beach town would have literally every second shop seeing real fur and all the signs in German and Serbian? It was harder to get sunblock that it was to get a coat. None the less we found the beach.
We laid our towels down and decided to go for a nice dip. Andrea decided to warn me about jelly fish but I decided to go that step further and get bitten by one. The first aid worker was too busy checking out his tan than my bite, thankfully Andrea knew more than he did and I am still alive to tell the tale...
After about an hour we got bored. As it was our mission to become critics on where the best Souvs are made we set out to achieve our goal. Again we got bored we searched for the bus that would take us to the train station immediately but were told that the next bus was at 2.00pm. We didn't really think their was a reason for that so, we found the first taxi out of Katerini and to the train station. We were there informed that the next Train was in about 6 hours time to were we needed to catch our connecting train. We then decided to catch another taxi to Edessa's bus station.
Our taxi driver thought that he was a bit of an action hero either that or he didn't know how to read the speed limits. Once on the main road and heading towards a truck his mobile phone rang where he was planning his date with his lady friend when suddenly another mobile rang. Andrea and I were slightly confused at that stage as we didn't own a mobile phone but our taxi driver put us at ease when he pulled out his second mobile from his pocket (mind you still driving and talking on mobile no. 1)Unfortuantly for Mobile caller no. 2. her date was broken and our death wish just began.
Andrea and I felt the need that to take a photo of the Taxi driver who's driving Luna Park could never make into an adventure ride..
Halkidiki...
Whilst getting off the bus, as everywhere we were apporached by people offering us rooms. Andrea and I
