The second and subsequent generation of Greek Australians or Australian Greeks or Australians of Greek heritage or
and the list goes as to how we refer to ourselves are the highest population within our parikia.
So what have we done, what are we doing and where are we heading? The first issue is as to how we identify ourselves. Do we include our Greek influence depending on the social surrounding in order to be more excepted by our peers or only on the weekend when its time to head down to one of the Greek barakia?
As mentioned on countless occasions, our fathers and forefathers migrated and settled in Australia and at the time faced ongoing battles and problems that are imaginable to us. We have the advantage of knowing the language (even on a basic communication scale), we have furthered our education skills and live in an environment where the perception of what is a Greek is more positive. So why aren't we all utilising our resources and forming a solid working body together?
The Greek parikia have resources and organisations with people working on a professional and voluntary scale for the aim of promoting Hellenism but who is absorbing what is out there? Unfortunately not enough people. The new generation have the advantage of becoming part of the youth organisation, association brotherhood or club who consistently work to raise funds in order to host innovative events, have you ever attended...out of our own free will? Unlike other Greek events the money raised does not go into someone's pocket but back to you via seminars, cocktail functions, newspaper publications and many other avenues.
Modern Greek studies is being offered in nearly every suburb within Melbourne on a primary and secondary level assisting us to learn a language that has offered so much to civilisation but unfortunately is given minimal appreciation. Nearly each university is offering Greek studies and the ones who don't were regrettably shut down due to lack of support by people none other than us. Why haven't you chosen to further your studies in Greek? Did it offer enough credit points?
Newspapers, publications, English supplements, Television programs, radio stations, Internet sites are all on offer and most for free, how many of the second and subsequent generations follow or become actively involved within the Greek media in Melbourne. Other than being given the English supplement handout by a parent or simply purchased to "checkout" if they are in the nightclub photos, what about the articles that will further enlighten you about the world around us? Do you leave the room when others at home are watching Greek cable TV news? Have you ever sat down to attempt to know what is happening in Greece today? Sadly, most would answer no.
The unfortunate area of concern is that endless arrays of the second generation within our parikia simply do not know. They do not know about the Ancient Greek history, Mythology, Geography other than our parents village and if that, who is in government, the population, arts, Greek society, the major followed religion, traditional dancing, commemorative days, superstitions, the Greek cuisine, battles that have been fought, renowned philosophers, drama, namedays, sporting teams, the Cypriot struggle, the Macedonian issue, the Epirotic question, the metro in Athens and the list continues.
But our biggest dilemma is that the second and subsequent generations do not even know what is on offer at present for the Greek society living in Melbourne and have not made that simple attempt to learn about their own selves.
Tragically, when the organisations and people who are carrying the torch for our brighter tomorrow have left there will not be anyone left to keep the fire alive. All the resources we have today that many do not utilise will be cease to exist and our causes will be forgotten alone with how the Greek parikia once was. Make that attempt now not only for yourself but also for the future generations.
