Strelitzia
"Strelitzia"
Strelitzia reginae
S. reginae (strelitzia, bird-of-paradise flower)
Shaped like the heads of tropical birds, the multicolored 6-inch flowers of this
exotic plant usually appear in summer and fall, occasionally at other times, on
stout stalks above spear-shaped leaves about 4 to 6 inches wide and 18 to
30 inches long. Plants generally grow 4 to 6 feet tall.
HOW TO GROW.
Strelitzias do best in at least four hours of direct sunlight a day, night
temperatures of 50° to 55° and day temperatures of 68° to 72°. Allow the
soil to become slightly dry between waterings and fertilize every two weeks.
Plants should be grown in large tubs and divided only when it is absolutely
necessary; divisions often require two or three years to reach flowering size.
Generally pest free.
