The Town of Magrath was established in 1899 by Mormon workers from Utah and Idaho who were recruited by the Alberta Railway and Irrigation Company to construct irrigation works in the areas. These workers were paid partly in cash and partly with land in the town.
This was the first major irrigation work in Canada and was made possible by the workers' experience with the extensive irrigation undertaken by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS or Mormon) in Utah and Idaho. Magrath residents have developed this community into a "Garden City" using irrigation and the excellent soil conditions.
