Holiday Arrangements

What do you do when you are going on holiday? Well, you can either give your hamster(s) to a trustable friend. If you do not have any friends who can look after your hamster you can give your pet to your local pet shop or your VET. Look for someone who has experience with hamsters or has one of their own. My friends look towards me to look after their hamster because I have hamsters myself.

A lost hamster

Hamster loss, very common, This why you should know some nice traps for finding your hamster. The method I most like is the bucket and books. I have seen this work. What you do is you have a bucket, which is deeper than your hamster climbing height. Have books leading up to it in steps. In the bucket you can have bedding, food and any other treats. Keep this against the wall because hamsters tend to move along walls. Your hamster will climb up and would do anything for food and then will jump into the bucket and then can't come back out.
The second method is to put a small amount of food in each room and close all the doors and leave it overnight and the room with food missing is the room with the hamster and so now you can set up the trap in that room. If you have a dog or cat leave the cage open with food in because your hamster who will get so scared will realise the cage is the best place. But keep the cat and dog out of the suspect room. When I lost my hamster in the garden I was devastated, but I left food in the garden and I noticed all the food was eaten apart from the alfalfa sticks. This is how I knew my hamster was alive, so it is good to note your hamsters habits.

Facilities and toys

I would say most hamster owners suffer from the problem of your hamster always wanting to escape, to get over this problem you need to buy your hamster toys to play with and explore. Wooden toys are great for hamsters as they give the hamster something gnaw on with some enjoyment If you want you can make your own toys from spare toilet rolls and empty boxes. The toys can be your own creative inventions made from almost anything. This is why I like habitrail tube cages so much be they are well designed for the native habits of a Syrian hamster and can be easily upgradeable.

How to avoid hamster illnesses

Good hygiene is important in avoiding illnesses and I know you don't want a ill hamster, do you? To keep your hamster in the best conditions for avoiding illnesses you must:

1.Clean the cage out each week missing no places 2.Maintain a constant temperature in the room with your hamster ranging within Four Degrees Celcius.(18-26.7oC) 3.Clean out food pots and water bottles each day
4.Store hamster mix in a dry airtight container in a dark place
5.Wash hands before handling your hamsters if you have more than one.
6.Make sure the room is well ventilated.
7.Make sure you give fresh fruits and vegetables in small amounts only.
8.If you have a cold or flu try to keep well away from the hamster (your hamster can catch your cold)
