| X-RAYS, SCANS ETC. |
CT or CAT SCAN
Uses minimal doses of x-rays by scanning , recording the different thicknesses of tissues and translating them on to film. This can find an area where there are signs of injury and make a image of it.
MRI SCAN
Similar to a CAT scan but uses very powerful electromagnets instead of x-rays. There are no known side effects from using these magnets (unless you have a pacemaker)!.
Both CT and MRI scans are used after x-rays have been taken and not given the specialist enough information. They are both painless and less harmful than x-rays and allow the soft tissues to be seen. X-rays just show the bones and joints. They can avoid many operations that are unnecessary.
The bad news is that scanning involves you having to lie VERY still in a very confined space (bit like narrow tunnel). The operator disappears into another room and speaks to you using a microphone. It can also take a long time from a few minutes to 45 minutes, depending on the condition being diagnosed.
ULTRASOUND
Quick and painless means of seeing deep into your spine using sound waves. This is translated into a picture on screen.
MYELOGRAM
This looks at the nerve roots. It is an uncomfortable test lasting approx. half an hour. A dye is injected into the spinal canal and allowed to spread around the nerve roots. It then uses x-rays. This test is only used if surgery is being considered.
ELECTROMYOGRAPHY
This checks for 'faulty wiring' between the spinal cord and the muscles. Fine needles are inserted into the leg, calf and foot as these are the muscles usually affected by disc disease. The electrical activity is then measured when you are at rest or moving. If the response of a muscle group is not as good as it should be, then the blame is at the exact nerve root concerned. |
