PAINKILLERS

We have all been prescribed anti-inflamatories at some time or another for pain. They can be very helpful, however long term use of these can cause stomach ulcers.

My experience - I have had many an anti-inflamatory prescribed, none of which have given me much relief. I think they are probably best used for acute pains and not chronic pain.

CORTISONE INJECTIONS - They are quite painful to have, but can give some relief for as much as 6 months at a time.

My experience - I have had three cortisone injections in the past. They were quite painful, gave some relief (about 3wks). The unfortunate thing about these injections is that you are only allowed two or three a year, so I was told. Again not much good for chronic pain. I think if you have chronic pain you are better choosing one of the therapies below.

PHYSICAL THERAPIES - For more details, please see individual Therapy Pages.

PHYSIOTHERAPY - This aims to restore a person back to their normal function. A Physiotherapist will use, mobilisation, manipulation, heat and cold therapies, hydrotherapy and exercises.

My experience - Physio did not suit me ! The exercises are related to average sized persons who are more flexible than us. I find that I end up over-stretching making my problems worse.

OSTEOPATHY - This treats the body as a whole. It recognises that the body compensates for a problem, e.g. back problems can show up as foot pain, knees problems can show up as back pain etc. It consists of massage and manipulation of the bones to hopefully restore you back to normal.

My experience - Didn't work for me. I am also very wary of being manipulated.

CHIROPRACTIC - Again this treats the body as a whole and concentrates on restoring normal function to the spine. The therapist will probably use a series of thrusts with his/her hands to adjust the spine.

My experience - I saw a McTimmoney Chiropractor, which is said to be a 'more gentler' form of chiropractic. I had to have numerous visits which proved VERY expensive, however, I did benefit from it for a while, but there was no permanent cure.

ACUPUNCTURE - Works on the basis that a network of channels (meridans), run through the body. If one of these channels is blocked, then pain can result. They believe that by inserting very fine needles at points across the body it clears the blocked energy and helps relieve the pain.

My experience - I only had this once ! I was told it would not be painful, but I found it to be so. Maybe I have a low pain threshold. It did however, make an improvement for about 3-4 weeks.

AROMATHERAPY - This is gentle massage which aims to relax you and make you feel better. Certain oils can make you feel uplifted or relaxed. You may even have a blend of oils made up to suit your condition.

My experience - Have not experienced this.

HOMEOPATHY - Based on 'like curing like'. This means a small amount of the disease is used as a medicine. This is helpful for rheumatic conditions, stiff neck or muscular aches and pains.

My experience - Have not experienced this.

HYPNOTISM - This cannot cure your pain, but can help you cope with it.

My experience - Have not experienced this.

RELAXATION - This again helps you cope with your pain. You can buy relaxation tapes and do it at home.

My experience - I found it very difficult to relax. The tape was so slow and I got very bored with it.

EXERCISES - This is good for chronic pain suffers. It lifts your spirits, strengthens weakened muscles and activates the control mechanism of pain. Regular gentle exercise can help to build up strength, suppleness and ease your pain.

My experience - I have found this to be MY ANSWER to my back problem. I cycle each day for 20 mins on my exercise bike, lift some light weights, sit ups, squats and back stretches. I still get bad days but they don't seem to happen as often now I am exercising. You have to find out what exercises are right for you, as what works for one person might not work for another.
Exercise also helps you keep your weight down. And we all know that the more weight we carry around with us the more our pain will be !

AS YOU CAN SEE I HAVE HAD MANY EXPERIENCES WITH DIFFERENT THERAPIES. I FOUND THAT MY OWN WAY OF COPING (exercising) IS THE ANSWER FOR ME ! I HOPE YOU FIND YOURS.
