COD LIVER OIL
This is an excellent source of the omega3 fatty acids. Research has shown that it helps protect cartilage, the flexible connective tissue surrounding your joints.
It can take up to three months before you will notice any benefit. You can either take it off the spoon or in capsules. A daily intake of at least 1,000mg a day is recommended.
GLUCOSAMINE
This can have an effect on arthritic joints. It is involved in the reformation and rebuilding of connective tissue such as cartilage.
I take this supplement myself and believe that it DOES help. I also believe that because many of the growth disorders are related to lack of cartilage, it makes sense to look after what little we have.
OIL OF EVENING PRIMROSE
This can help maintain your skin. It is also said to be helpful for women taken a few days before their period. It can again take up to 3 months before you will notice any change.
GARLIC
Studies have suggested that garlic may help to maintain a healthy heart and circulation by lowering your cholestrol levels. I definitely believe this, as I had a very high cholestrol level and started to take garlic capsules and eat pro-active spread. Within 3 months my cholestrol was right down. I now continue to take them. It also has been linked with an increase in the body's defence system and prevention of infection.
MAGNESIUM
Magnesium is essential for our bones. It has a role in the transmission of nerve impulses and muscle movement. It also helps to repair and maintain healthy body cells.
Good sources are nuts, soya beans, wholewheat flour, wholemeal bread, pasta, dried fruit and green vegetables. |
