by Jennifer Castillo,
(upon the passing of her Great Grandmother, Evelyn Sabin)
I struggled to open my eyes,
for I was so weary.
As I looked around I saw my four strong boys,
they looked about as weary as I felt.
Tim was sitting beside me holding, and gently caressing my hand.
Tom was holding his head in one hand the other hand tenderly holding my feet.
Jim's face was buried mournfully in the pillow next to me.
Bob knelt next to me saying "We love you mother".
Dear God take care of my babies
While we are apart,
they will need you so much.
Suddenly a great peace swept over my aching body
and things around me grew ever so dim.
I closed my eyes and let go.
It was very dark for a moment,
I noticed that the pain had disappeared.
I had been so cold,
but now a light began to shine all around me
as a comforting warmth crept over me
more wonderful than any summer afternoon I had ever known.
That warmth seemed to be blowing right through me.
As things became more clear to me,
I realized that I now had begun walking down a cobblestone path and
all around me, as far as I could see, were breathtakingly beautiful wild flowers.
I kneeled down and smelled the sweet scent all around me.
There were daisies, tulips, posies, daffodils
and flowers more beautiful and sweet than I had ever known.
The sky was a brighter and cheerier blue than I had ever experienced.
It was so peaceful,
I decided to rest a while and just take in the beauty.
Later, I rose up to continue along the stone path thinking
"Is this heaven? Am I in heaven?"
Then something, someone, came into view down the path far in front of me.
Arms stretched out, they were running toward me. As that person got closer to me I
began to recognize his face. The face I had spent a lifetime with!
"Yes, it is you!"
Laughter overwhelmed me. "My husband it is you!"
I ran toward him and we embraced.
"My beautiful Evelyn," he shouted, "it is you. I've missed you!"
He picked some flowers and put them in my hair.
He was so excited!
"Evelyn," he said, "come with me, I want to introduce you to someone."
So we ran down the path hand in hand for a little
further until we reached a crowd of people.
The people saw us coming and parted to let us through.
When the last of the crowd had parted,
I laid my eyes on the most beautiful person I had ever seen.
It was for this I had lived my life, for this very moment!
Bob let go of my hand and I walked toward my Saviour, my Lord and King.
When I reached him I was crying so that I couldn't even speak.
I knelt and caressed his lovely nail-scarred feet.
"My Saviour, my beautiful Saviour!"
His strong and gentle hands
touched my forehead,
and as he did I felt his healing oil running down my brow.
I knew
that I wouldn't trade another lifetime for how I felt at that moment.
Jesus said to me,
"My precious Evelyn, welcome home!
I have waited so long for you... for this
BELOVED REUNION!"
