Islamic Libertarians: Minaret of Freedom

Dear Friends,

What do we stand for? For Liberty, Market Freedom and Individual Sovereignty.

Welcome to the Bangadesh Libertarian Party (BLP)! We are organizing an internet drive to establish the BLP as the Party of Principle for Liberty, Market Freedom and Individual Sovereignty in Bangladesh. The promise of this Nation for the cause of civil liberty and economic freedom is to demonstrate the relevance of Libertarian principles to the developing world.

The Bangladesh Libertarian Party stands for freedom for ALL of the people of Bangladesh and as a focal point for the aspirations of each of our citizens to achieve liberty and
dignity in the full context of Bangladeshi culture and ideals.

We stand for the sacred right of adherents of every religion and philosophy to pursue their ideals in the absence of governmental or other physical coercion.

The BLP stands for the right of the individual to pursue his or her values in the widest possible context. Together, we can build even further the glorious potential of our great civilization.

The Libertarian movement in Bangladesh is:

*Educating on economic alternatives
*Helping against Malaria
*Developing dialogue

POLITICS FOR BANGLADESH

Despite reforms and liberalization around the world, Bangladesh still suffers from crippling economic and political Down syndrome. The certain way to overcome our appalling distress is not to wait for some great charismatic leader but to divert and focus our mind on few basic principles upon which a society and a nation can securely strive and aspire for economic prosperity amidst political stability.

Bangladesh has seen long military dictatorships; absurd socialist totalitarianism; highly corrupt and authoritarian bureaucratic economic planning; vigorous lending, leadership and guidance by the IMF, the World Bank, the academically rich consultants and the affluent donor country governments; but none of these could bring any positive result other than aggravating our economic despair, damage and destruction.

Bangladesh continues to hear consistent promises made by politicians, and sermons and preaching by leading academics for a greater and a larger role of the state, and through its benevolent arm, the government, to deliver the fruits of their dictated economic plans at the doorstep of every citizen.

We see differently - the Libertarian way where the unrestrained free market forces allocate resources and reward enterprise, and where governments are reduced to being true servants of the people - protecting life, liberty and property.

OBJECTIVES: BANGLADESH AWAMI LIBERTARIAN PARTY

1. It should be incorporated in the country's Constitution that ONLY the ballot box would determine political party leadership and positions within political organizations. All political parties wishing to contest national, regional or local polls must satisfy the independent Election Commission on this account to prove that the said politicians are practicing democrats before they are allowed to run for any public office. Internal party elections must be conducted by independent bodies not by the party apparatus.

Bangladesh can be a true liberal democratic country if the same is practiced within all political parties contesting elections as mandated in the Constitution.

2. Sovereignty of the TV/Radio/ print media.

3. Separation and Sovereignty of the judiciary.

4. The Repeal of all arbitrary laws including the Special Powers Act of 1974 and PSA 2000.

5. Debureaucratization of the economy including unilateral free trade instead of the favoured reciprocal process that involuntarily involves state bureaucrats and the vested class from respective nations to the detriment of the common consumer and the producer.

6. Flat tax (personal and corporate) and flat custom duties to reduce regulatory harassment by Custom and Tax officials as a transitional measure.

7. Rule of Law. No majority vote in the parliament, or any force or referendum outside the parliament, or no government, can ever be allowed to alter or suspend the fundamental human rights such as, the freedom of speech, religion, trade, travel, the right to dissent and other natural rights of man that he is born with.

8. Redefining the role of a government and strictly restricting it to the task of protecting a citizen's life and property irrespective of his/her political/religious beliefs. A government would also have the supreme responsibility of defending the national boundaries.

9. Downsizing the government; as a government is no longer the engine of economic growth many departments that were once created to develop and build the country should now be shut down to save expenditure. The people will thus be immensely enriched by having fewer and lesser tax and VAT bills to clear, including utility charges like gas, water, electricity, etc., when the government owned utility companies are forced to compete in the free market for their market share.

10. Decentralization and localization of power.

11. Autonomous status and functioning of all Municipality Corporations/State Owned Enterprises.

12. Independence of the Central Bank, the Audit Commission and the Anti Corruption Bureau.

13. Education: government need no longer own and build schools and use it for its political ends but let the private and the NGO sector, national or international, provide education - the curricula of which need not be imposed by the state.
Governments can issue VOUCHERS to poor students to attend any school. The voucher scheme and distancing the government from direct ownership and running of the schools/colleges/universities, would halt the present day poor quality of education, endless violence and politicization of our institutions, owned or funded by the government.

14. Health: A free sector with more participation by NGO, foreign and local private health entrepreneurs to provide various medical facilities including innovative insurance and other financial instruments schemed by the financial world to help avail quality medical attention at affordable costs within the country. Government VOUCHERS can also be provided to the very poor for quality medical attention.

15. Abolishing Foreign Exchange Acts: The HUNDI or the black market that thankfully evades numerous government controls on the movement of money should be legalized and recognized as legitimate financial arrangement between sovereign individuals of sovereign nations.

16. Denationalizing MONEY that is still a state monopoly worldwide in the age of global privatization. We in Bangladesh must be free to transact in competitive currencies and fiat money of various governments, and also money that is privately issued and fully backed by metals, such as gold or silver, unlike government's mere paper money to truly reflect the meaning of money - a medium of exchange and a store of value.

Today's fiat money of any government throughout the world, is cheap, abundant and backed by nothing/debt, therefore, distributed/allocated at will in exchange of votes by politicians seeking office. Cheap money has distorted our economic ethics, values and vision. We all run madly to make money- to get our share of the money that is abundantly issued by the government, without ever considering to produce something useful and vital, to be exchanged by some other useful and vital commodity or service made freely available, by traders and enterpreneurs, in the open market in Bangladesh or abroad.

But in contrast, Communities have shown that experiments in private moniesand independent banking and microloans work on every level. It is time to extend such libertarian ideas to develop Libertarian communities in our country.
