| A WAYWARD GRANDSON - A GRANDMOTHER'S LOVE |
 |
| by GEORGE MARSHALL |

Written May 12, 1996Mother's Day
Grandmother, I cry for you
Precious One
while asleep
My Everlasting Love
for you, so deep!
But now
you're gone
and
I'm so alone!
Why, Grandmother, why?
Why of all the people
on earth
must you die?
I still cry ...
And I'm still alone ...
Remembering
your old sweet face
the way you said
table grace
bedtime stories you told
while in your sweet arms
I lay enfold.
Your long gray hair ...
Grandmother did I put
more gray hair there?
I know I did
and
I'm so sorry
and
if Old Father Time
would only let
me borrow
more time ...
I'd be different Grandmother
I swear!
I'd do better by you ...
I'd really care! But
I can't borrow time
and
You'll never return ...
I was hardheaded
and stubborn
I wouldn't learn.
But ...
by God's mercy and grace
maybe again
I can look upon your beautiful face!
Oh! The memories
I have ...
Are you hungry?
Are you cold?
You'd ask
I'd say, yes, Grandma,
and
you'd begin the task
of restoring me
and
making me whole again ...
A gift of homemade quilt
to
keep out the cold north wind.
Then stories of yesteryear ...
All so far away,
yet so near.
Where were you born?
I'd eagerly ask,
You'd tell me all ...
and
I would bask
in your warm
and
gentle ways,
while you'd continue
to tell stories
of the good old days.
You raised me from
a child ...
but
at fourteen
I began
going wild.
No church for me
I'd say
going foolishly
on my way ...
never thinking
of
tomorrow ...
In your eyes
the
pain and sorrow
You'd love me till
age ninety-eight
but
I wouldn't change
and
you couldn't wait.
You're now in Heaven
and
I'm still here
You're looking down
on
the
one you love
so dear pleading ... Grandson,
Be of Worth!
Heaven is Beautiful
Leave that old Earth!
I'm alone ...
and
I still cry ...
why sweet Grandmother
did you have to die!?
You answer in
a
voice so sweet,
Grandson, we will
again one day meet ...
'T'will be in the
Sweet by and by
But ...
Till then hush...
and
please don't cry!
(In Loving Memory of Julia A. Marshall Anthony. "Grandmother, You're gone from this earth, but you will always remain in my heart. Till we meet again, go with God, Precious One." Psalms 23.)

GEORGE HAS TOURETTE SYNDROME WHICH CAUSES HIM TO SUFFER UNCONTROLLABLE BODY TICS AND VOCALIZATIONS. BECAUSE OF THIS, HE HAS BEEN ABUSED AND BEATEN BY OTHER PRISONERS AND STAFF DURING THE WHOLE OF HIS TIME IN THE ADC. HE HAS SPENT THE PAST 6 YEARS IN SEGREGATION AND HIS HEALTH IS BEGINNING TO FAIL AS HE IS 50+ YEARS OLD. BECAUSE HE HAS NO FAMILY, AND IS SUCH A SPECIAL PERSON, MY FATHER AND I HAVE "ADOPTED HIM" AND HE HAS APPLIED FOR A TRANSFER FROM THE ARKANSAS TO THE WASHINGTON STATE DOC, SO THAT I CAN VISIT HIM AND SEE THAT HIS MEDICAL NEEDS ARE MET. HIS APPLICATION HAS BEEN APPROVED, BUT HE IS SOMETHING LIKE #32 ON THE LIST. GEORGE MAY NOT LIVE LONG ENOUGH TO GET TO THE TOP OF THAT LINE.
WON'T YOU PLEASE TAKE A MINUTE TO SEND GOVERNOR HUCKABEE A MESSAGE ASKING HIM TO EXPEDITE GEORGE'S TRANSFER TO WASHINGTON STATE PRISON? WE WILL REALLY APPRECIATE IT.
THANK YOU.
LINDA TANT MILLER
