Hank Narmour Memorial - Hill Country Post #64
June 2008 Newsletter Volume 17 #10

Legion Baseball In Ingram - Sponsored by the Hank Narmour Memorial Hill Country Post #64 - How about that!

Commanders Notes
By Gene Rampy

We had a great turnout at our monthly Board meeting this morning and a lot of important items for the post was discussed, I will not go into them here as they will be covered later in this newsletter and at our next regular meeting.

The one thing I will mention is our June meeting (the last until September). At this meeting, we will have our new officers installed and we all owe it to them to be at the meeting to wish them well. Dick deBruyn is planning a meal for us and if I know Dick, it will be great. Remember, the meeting on that day will start at 5:00 PM rather than the regular time and the Auxiliary is invited. They better come cause they always bring goodies to go along with the meal.

One thing I would mention. I have been your Commander for the last year and have enjoyed it along with the great support I got from all the other officers and project supervisors. It has been fun guys and I want to wish the new slate of officers who will be installed at the June meeting all the best. I think we have a great crew taking over for next year and I am looking forward to sitting in the back and kibitzing.

1st Vice Commander
By Dick deBruyn

It has been a pleasure being your 1st Vice Commander this year. My last function will be the June 10th Installation dinner. The dinner will be served after the normal meeting and after the officers have been installed.

Please RSVP to me 367-2450 or Gene Rampy at 367-3020 on or before Friday June 6th so that we may plan the food for the dinner.

2nd Vice Commander
By Jim Ownbey

Our new Commander, Dan Thompson didn’t waste any time getting us a new project. Post 64, by order of it’s board, is the American Legion sponsor of the Ingram Boys, 17 and under, summer Legion baseball team.

The coaches are Greg Nichols and Jim Bell. Greg and Jim have been coaching baseball in Little League, junior high school and now high school summer ball for many years. It’s their experience that will coach, direct and lead the new team. Under their leadership we can expect a winning season.

You will all be able to keep up with the team by going to Post 64 web site:

I will post the team, coaches, schedule and game results after every game.

The team will play home games on the Ingram High School field. We expect to see all of you at the games. Teams in our district will be Ingram, Kerrville, Hondo, Bandera, Castroville, Devine, D’Hanis and Uvalde.

The teams goal is to win district, win region in Nebraska and go to the American Legion World Series in North Carolina.

In case you are wondering why I am writing about baseball, pull up a chair and I’ll tell you. I had an MD appointment the morning the board met, so I could not attend. In my absence, the board approved Commander Thompson’s request for sponsorship of the baseball team, and nominated me to be the American Legion manager. Nominations were closed. The vote
was unanimous and I was shafted..er I mean elected without so much as a “By your leave!”.

That's my story and I am sticking to it. The problem is I love baseball and will enjoy my association with the team and the coaches and our Legion fans!

Adjutants Notes
By John Romero

This has been a great year for me as your Adjutant. There have been many accomplishments that should make us all proud to be Legionnaires and part of this great post.

One of our members, Dr. Charles Edwards will be attending the American Legion State Convention in Corpus Christi, Texas (June 25-29, 2008) representing our post. Mr. James McNair from El Paso is running for Department/State Commander and if he is elected, he has asked Charles to serve as the Department/State Chaplain.

Dr. Edwards has served the American Legion (Department of Texas) as Chaplain for:
1) Post(s)
Austin - Knebel #83
Ingram - Hank Narmour Memorial - Hill Country #64
2) District #21
3) Division #4

It will be a great feather in our cap to have one of our outsanding members as Department Chaplain.

Armin Pagel will be presenting a check to the Ingram Volunteer Fire Department on

Tuesday May 27th. We plan to have a picture of he and our Commander Gene Rampy and a short article for the Current.

After our June meeting Commander Gene Rampy will have been replaced by Dan Thompson, Thanks Gene for your leadership and a fine year; Our 1st Vice Commander Dick deBruyn has done an outstanding job this year and will highlight his year in office by managing the installation dinner on June 10th. He will be succeeded by Ed Fournier; It will be hard to fill the shoes of our Treasurer, Tom Miller. He will pass this job onto the able hands of Armin Pagel. Thanks Tom for a fine job done during your tenure; Our Sergeant @ Arms Billye Joe Lloyd is handing over this duty to Weldon Tyler. Thanks Billye and last but not least Bob Silliman’s able hands in the position of Service Officer will now be handled by Billye Joe Lloyd. Thanks Bob for a fine job during your tenure.

During the summer months be sure and keep in touch by tuning in to our web site:

This way you can keep up with any activities
that would normally be in the newsletters for as you know we don’t publish newsletters in July or August, thanks.

Chaplains Notes
By Frank Murray

Prayer of the month: O God, creator of this good land, help us to be worthy of citizenship in our nation. Bless our country with loyal people and dedicated leaders. Guard us from unlawful acts and cowardly fear. We also ask your blessing on the veterans of our nation and grant that the American Legion may always do your will. Amen

As you are aware, many of our Legionnaires are slowly leaving this earthly domain for greater rewards. Remember B.M. Francis a member of our post who passed away in April and hopefully he has joined the great post in heaven.

VA Bingo
By Billye Joe Lloyd

We had a very low attendance of patients for the bingo this month. There were only 18 patients present. Those there had a good time as evidenced by the comments made by those present.

Many thanks to Mary Lou Narmour and the Unit 64 Auxiliary for the snacks, Mary Lou and Gale Lloyd were the servers.

Helping with Bingo were Jim Ownbey Weldon Tyler, John Romero, Gale Lloyd and yours truly. We always have a good time so come on out and see what you are missing, till next time.

Auxiliary Notes
By Sally deBruyn

American Legion Auxiliary met Monday, May 12, in IOHA clubhouse. We established who would provide bananas for the months May through August for the VA monthly Bingo games. Mary Lou Narmour is in charge of getting the bananas to the hospital. She is helped in this by Gale Lloyd and Dee Miller.

Marian Hawran read letters of appreciation from Peterson Hospice and Hill Country Youth Ranch thanking the auxiliary for the donations we made for Joey Fenton and Shirley King. Also a letter from K’STAR thanked us for the gift card we bought for them.

We held election of officers. President: Dee Thompson; Vice-president: Henrietta Tyler; Treasurer: Gale Lloyd; Secretary: Sally deBruyn; Chaplain: JoAnn Stopke; Historian: Rusty Fournier; and Sgt-at-arms: Olivia Carothers. These officers will be installed at the June 10th meeting at the IOHA Clubhouse. The meeting will start at 5:00 pm followed by the installation and dinner with the Post 64 members. The Auxiliary has agreed to provide the deserts as usual.
