| Well after many nights of trying to get that child to learn to read and lots of thinning hair because you have pulled it out....think a minute do you really like reading? Now come on tell the truth if you had a choice between a good novel and going out for a good pizza which would you choose? Ok well that is how I did it...If Tiki wanted to have anything she had to sound out the sign...funny how motivating a child's desire is...and you have to stick with it no giving in...so don't pick places you want to go or have to go...do this on your free time...We use to do lots of things to get her to learn to read but if a child sees no value in reading there will be little to no motivation for it... Reading is essential for doing anything in a technologically advanced society...right now you are reading to help your child...There are lots of web pages on the internet and even free web pages your child can read with you to learn how to do a web page....I have some information and stories here at maxpages to acompany this page you can click on their names in the left hand colum and I have a site for ABC's for Kyla at http://www.geocities.com/Athens/Academy/1746/ and a site for children's stories at http://www.geocities.com/EnchantedForest/Cottage/4719...This is also provided for free by this very nice website provider.... Teaching any child has become more of a lesson for me than for the child...Especially as smart as they have become these days...don't let them play you be smart you are the adult...but don't be dull either...Some of the greatest novels in the world are comprised of words you have to read...So my suggestion is don't start with a not high demand book that is required for reading like a college text book...Go to where the real competition is...in a library or a bookstore...That is where we went... I made reading part of an everyday requirement for Tiki (my University project for my reading course)...That child outsmarted me for almost the entire semester I almost didn't figure out she could not read...Anyone who is smart enough to remember an entire paragraph they hear read to them then recite it back almost word for word can learn to read..You just have to find the key to unlock the door...Tiki was in the third grade and could not read the word 'a' or 'an', no one could teach her...After all the psychology of education and reading techniques failed I finally was blessed enough to find out why...She left her books out in the rain I gave her...She had never seen anyone read in her life so she did not value reading.. So I told her like it is....If you do not learn to read you will be doing chores the rest of your life, cooking, cleaning, ironing for a living (she hates chores). Then I asked her what would you like to do. She said to me "Teaching or my art." I told her without the ability to read you will never have those opportuinities or be able to drive. She cried but she understood. She walked into the bedroom picked up a book and began to read. Tiki can now read and write...All the work I did was for naught..Tiki taught herself how to read when she found value in it... Here on the internet reading is a very large part. But beware there are people out here who have problems and like to share them with children who are not mentally capable of dealing with them...Look they are adults having problems dealing with them too. So be careful and pick your sites wisely...I spam sites that have pornography with the honest viewpoints I have...two or three letters... I say this is lewd and uncalled for take it off the net so children won't be bothered with it...Why not I did not come out here to deal with their problems I came out here to share... By the by I almost quit Tiki for my grade depended on sucess...then I began to think...this child may never learn to read...I can always write up a good report to cover myself but if Tiki is ever going to make it in this world she needs to learn to read...so I did not give up...and eventually I found the key...every child has something they can respond to...Kyla like the computer and videos - so with the tv I have begun to turn on the closed caption for her.
