Choosing Knitting Needles
Standard needles are straight needles with a knob on one end to keep stitches from falling off. Sizes range from 7" to 14" long. Using needles that are longer than necessary can be tiring.
Wooden needles can bend after prolonged use and sometimes absorb dyes from the yarn.
Double-pointed needles come in lengths from 5" to 10" and are pointed at both ends. These needles come in sets of four and are used to create seamless items like mitts and socks. The cast-on stitches are divided among three needles and the fourth needle is used to work the stitches.
Circular needles are also used for seamless knitting. They come in 9 to 36" lengths and have short points made from either metal or plastic joined with a length of nylon. |
