The Future of Game Boy-- Breaking News from Japan!
Nintendo Co. Ltd. made the initial announcement of the successor to Game Boy today when it unveiled early details about Game Boy Advance (temporary name). In addition, Nintendo announced it will form a joint venture, Mobile 21, with Konami to develop software for the new player.
Game Boy Advance will use a 32-bit RISC CPU developed by Cambridge, UK based ARM corporation, a well-known developer of CPUs for cellular phones. In addition to sporting a powerful 32-bit CPU, Game Boy Advance will be able to connect to a cellular phone (or a PHS phone in Japan) to access the Internet, thus allowing users to download game software, participate in multi-player games, chat and exchange E-mail. Using a planned digital camera accessory (not the existing Game Boy Camera), a game player would actually be able to see the face of the person they are playing against.
Adding communication features to a portable game system like Game Boy is expected to result in new kinds of network entertainment. In effect, Game Boy Advance will be a personal communications terminal as well as a next generation gaming system. Nintendo Co. Ltd. Chairman, Hiroshi Yamauchi, sees it as a way to explore new areas of multiplayer gaming.
Mobile 21 will also develop software for Nintendo's next generation home system, code named Dolphin, that takes advantage of the connection capability between Game Boy Advance and the home unit. Initial staff members of the new company will come from both Nintendo and Konami, with new employees to be added as development is expanded.
Interest in the new unit among developers is high, and more developers for Game Boy Advance will be announced in the future. Game Boy Advance will play software for both Game Boy and Game Boy Color, though games designed exclusively for Game Boy Advance will not be backwards compatible.
The retail price for the Game Boy Advance and its accessories has not yet been determined, though a mass-market price is expected. Game Boy Advance is slated for an August 2000 release in Japan and is tentatively set to release before the end of 2000 in North America.
