Notes for LAURA ANN SWETNAM:
Somewhere in the notes of Reis Rene Kash is a description of Laura A. Swetnam and her farm where his father, Reis C. Kash, visited.
Ltr. Reis C. Kash to Sag Kash, 20 Aug 1936:
1) "My grandmother (Laura Swetnam), who is nearly 90 years old, still lives at Owingsville, KY...a few miles from Mt. Sterling. She was a Swetnam before her marriage. My father and mother (Carlton Kash and Lilly Johnson Kash) lived there until his death when I was two years old, which was about 29 years ago. [i.e., about 1906 or 1907]. After that we went to Illinois where I went to school and had various jobs after graduating. I was on a fraternal publication in Peoria, IL for a year and then with a manufacturing company at Bloomington for four or five years, then Kentucky again on the {Somerset} Journal. [was advertising manager with the manufacturing company.] Wanted to study medicine but could not afford to do so.
Ltr, not dated, from retired teacher Clara Arnold, who referred to "Aunt Laura [Swetnam], to Reis C. Kash.
1) An ancient Saxon family in England before the Norman Conquest. In 1691 the line had been established through 22 generation. Late in 17th Century, about 1692, a Lord Neri Sweetenham had a son, John, who married an actress and came to America, settling in Stafford Co., VA. Their grandson, John Swetnam, married Laurah Ticklin (Fickland) in 1772. Their son, Neri Swetnam (20 Nov 1777-7 Jan 1862) married Mildred Cross on 25 Dec 1803. Her dates may be 20 May 1778-20 July 1860). Neri and Mildred Swetnam migrated from Culpepper Co., VA to Lawrence Co. KY in 1819 and purchased an "immense boundary of land" on Blaine. He was a man of wealth and fine manners, entertained a president, probably Monroe. Neri and Mildred Cross Swetnam had eight children - one of them the [great grand father of Reis C. Kash] John James Swetnam (10 Jun 1811- 18 Aug 1898) who in 1840 married Rebecca Osborne (11 Sep 1820-1 Apr 1864). In 1863, John James Swetnam moved to Bath Co., KY and purchased land. Also owned 1000 acres in Red River Valley, Morgan and Wolfe Counties. John and Rebecca are buried in Owingsville Cemetery. They had eleven children - James, Louise, Isaac, Laura Ann (29 Jan 1849-9 Oct 1937) who married Reese Kash (1841-18??) and are buried in the same lot with her mother and father. [The father of Reis C. Kash] is also buried in the Owingsville Cemetery "and there was a place for your mother." Children of Laura Ann Swetnam and Reese Kash are: Curtis, Alta, Bruce (Laura's death cert. signed by one Brutus Kash), Carl (Carleton?), whom Aunt Laura called "Carlee." Carl, Carleton or Carlee married Lily Johnson, 09 Oct 1886-20 Oct 1945 [parents George Johnson and Rhoda (Jones?) of KY] and "Aunt Laura never got over his death. He was so young." They had one son - you. [Note-there is no mention of another Carleton/Lily Kash child, though the 1910 census shows there was one.]
Aunt Laura and your father owned a pretty farm where the little village of Slate Valley is now. She sold the front part for building lots. Then she finally sold the rest of the farm. The house burned later. It was very beautiful down there. Aunt Laura was a great person, a fine lady. All young people loved her. She had a vast store of tales regarding Civil War days, the tricks she pulled, and about the young men who courted her. A widow for 50 years, she had more than her share of sorrow.
John James Swetnam married a second time, her name Clarinda Elkins Moore, first cousin once removed to Rebecca Osborne. Three children-Mary Alice Swetnam, writer's (Clara Arnold) mother.
One of Aunt Laura's sisters, Nora Francis (22 Dec 1855-7 Nov 1932) m. Dr. Oliver Kash in 1882 in Bath and are buried at Carlisle, KY. They had one son, Dr. Clarence Kash, who married Lula Sagaser. Clarence is dead. Didn't you meet their son, Sagaser Kash.
