Descendants of John Cash
Generation No. 1
1. JOHN CASH was born 1726 in Edinburg, Scotland and died 1780 in Augusta County, Virginia. He married RACHEL McALLISTER Abt. 1770.
Notes for John cash:
According to court records, Augusta Co., VA, John Cash was a soldier during 1779-1780, and possibly longer than that.
History of Augusta Co., VA Vol. 1, p. 365
1) 23 March 1779-Relief of Rachel Cash, wife of John Cash, a soldier...
2) 10 October 1779 Caleb Cash, son of John Cash, aged 5 years to be bound...(Note: John Cash had two sons, James and Caleb. James was born 5 February 1772, which fits the age of Caleb.)
3) 27 March 1780, Mary, daughter of John cash, to be bound... (Note: Need to find out if John and Rachel Cash had a daughter named Mary.)
Foregoing extracted from a note by D.L. Cash dated 21 May 1967.
This information does two important things: a.) it places John Cash and Rachel McAllister in Augusta Co., VA during 1779-1780 and b.) it places John Cash in the Revolutionary War.
The entries pertaining to Caleb, Mary and Rachel Cash are also reflected in "Chronicles of the Scotch-Irish Settlers in Virginia Extracted from court records, Augusta Co. 1745-1800" by Laymay Chably, Vol. II. There are numerous other interesting contemporaneous records of the courts, such as indictments for making treasonous statements against the Continental government and other indications of loyalists action by others, non-Cashes.
Worldwide Web Site: Ancestors of William Charles Andre reflects the following:
"184. John CASH, b. 1726 in Edinburg, Scot. D. 1780 in Augusta Co., VA. Married 185. Rachel McAllister b. about 1750. Died ext 1775-1841. (But this should be after 1779, based on Entry 1, above, which shows she received relief on 23 March 1779). Notes for John Cash. They were listed on tax books of North Umberland Co., PA, in 1772 when John owned 300 acres. Sometime after the birth of their son, James, in 1772, family left PA for Rockingham Co., VA (sic). John was a soldier in the Revolutionary War. Children: i. Mary Kash, ii. James Sr. Kash b. 05 March 1772, North Umberland Co., PA d. 07 March 1851 at Hazel Green, KY. Married Phoebe Lacy 17 December 1791, iii. Caleb Kash 10 October 1773 Augusta Co., VA d. 1850 Morgan Co., KY. Married (1) Betsy Trimble about 1798; (2) Cena Wilson 26 November 1818 in Floyd Co., KY. (He and his second wife had children and settled in Gillmore, KY. Betsy and Caleb lived in Daysboro, Morgan Co., KY. She died early.
John Cash may be a son of William Cash, the Salem Mariner, who had a son named John and part of whose family went to PA. This needs checking out. It may be that the birth date of 1726 is significant.
Notes for RACHEL McALLISTER:
23 Mar 1779-Relief of Rachel, wife of John Cash, a soldier. (In the same month and year-" Henry Penniger bound to the grand jury for speaking disrespectful words toward Congress and the currency. Philip Akert and Job Reynolds convicted of conspiring with enemies of the state.")
27 Mar 1778- Mary, daughter of John Cash, to be bound.
24 Aug 1779-Caleb Cash, son of John Cash, about 5 years on 10 Oct last, to be bound.

The ltr also enclosed a photo cy (sic) (sic) of a deed signed by Robert Brooke, Esq., Governor of the Common Wealth of Virginia 5 Feb 1795 and the 19th year of the Commonwealth-to James Cash assignee of James Lacy 318 acres in Greenbriar Co., VA, that upon receipt of two Land Office Treasure (instruments?) numbered 12318 and 16, 873, on the headwaters of Stinking Lick near Indian Creek and some of the waters of Banks Creek. (Note: James Cash was 23 at this time. An assignee is a person who whom a claim, right, property is transferred, a person appointed to act for another. Would this mean that Lacy had the certificates and sold or transferred them to James, who married Phoebe Lacey?) See Simms Index to Land Grants in W. VA, State of W. VA, 1952, p. 136: "Greenbriar County" and "Kash, James" "318 acres on Wts (waters) of Indian Creek 1795 book 3, p. 171."
Greenbriar Co., VA (now W. VA), was formed in 1777 from Boteourt and Montgomery Counties.

Kash's Knob in Montgomery Co., KY was named for James Kash according to Sag Kash (Ltr, 24 Sep 1966). (Note: Miles Kash was Sag Kash's great-grandfather. (Ibid)
James (Sr.) Kash later moved from Montgomery Co. (near Mount Sterling) KY, to Red River below Hazel Green, KY.
