Mary Conklin

"Over the past 10 Kearny High School softball seasons many of the girls previously mentioned received awards and All-County recognition for their accomplishments; but one in particular will always be remembered for her outstanding achievements".

Introducing the "PLAYER OF THE DECADE"................

................MARYANN SOARES.......................
................(1994-1997............................

Maryann, who was a starting varsity player since her freshman year, is one of the finest athletes ever to attend Kearny High School. During her four years of athletics, competing in both soccer and softball, Maryann received numerous honors and awards for her accomplishments. She was a first team All-County player in both sports every year since she was a freshman. She was also selected to the Star Ledger All-State Team in her senior year of softball.
As a softball player, her tremendous arm and remarkable agility made her a sensational shortstop. She was always enjoyable to watch; just waiting to see her make some type of acrobatic play. As a hitter Maryann holds almost every offensive record, putting some amazing statistics on the board. Over a four year period, the righty slugger had 131 base hits in 292 at bats for a whopping .450 career batting average. Her four year final batting averages were (.350, .476, .500, and .483), which were good enough to win her three batting titles. Her final stats included, 16 doubles, 16 triples, and 28 homeruns! She also tallied 144 r.b.i.'s and 130 runs scored.
Maryann was honored in her senior year by Coach Wasz.(who coached her for 9 athletic seasons) at their annual awards dinner with a poem entitled "The Legend of Maryann". Just kidding, he did however read her a poem.
Moving on to Brookdale College, Maryann continued to improve. As a freshman, she compiled a .559 batting average collecting 90 hits and 70 runs scored. In the slugging department, she belted 17 triples and 12 homeruns, to help her lead the nation (Div3) with 73 r.b.i.'s. For her remarkable efforts she was selected to the All-American Team. Maryann is now playing softball at Monmouth University on a full athletic scholarship. Hopefully, one day she will participatf on a professional or olympic softball team. Congratulations Maryann!!!! The Kearny High School Softball Team is Proud of YOU!!

We hope you enjoyed reading about the "Former Greats". We apologize if anyone has been missed.
