2001 Lady Kardinals Softball Highlights

...............................Kards Fall to Union H.S. 2-0

The Kearny High School softball team lost their first game of the season to Union High School by a score of 2-0. Union scored a run in the top of the second and added a run in the fourth inning to take a 2-0 lead. For the Kardinals, junior shortstop Lauren Roemer went 2-3 with a double and a single. On the mound sophomore pitcher Dana Warnock tossed a beautiful game, working all seven innings, scattering 5 hits.

.........................Kards Drop Second of Season to Freehold 2-0

The Kearny Kardinal softball team lost their second game of the season yesterday to Freehold Township by a score of 2-0. Pitcher Elese Anteaga spun a 3 hitter with 8 K's as the Pioneers won their first game of the year. For the Kardinals Junior pitcher Jennifer Smith threw an 8 hitter with 3 strikeouts. Getting hits for the Kards were Margie Mendez, Gabby Antao and Lauren Roemer. On defense,junior catcher Gabby Antao did a great job behind the dish: while third baseman Meghan Walsh made a few nice plays at the hot corner.

..........................Warnock Fires one-Hitter to Propel Kards

Sophomore pitcher Dana Warnock won her first varsity game of the season by tossing a 1-hit shutout as the Kards defeated Irvington H.S. 12-0. Warnock worked the minimun 5 innings striking out 9 batters en route to the team's first victory of the season.
Warnock also was the hitting star going 3-4 at the plate with a double, 2 singles and 3 runs batted in. Other Kearny hitters who had good days at the plate were Gabby Antao and Mia Carratura. Both girls each rapped 2 hits apiece. Lauren Roemer hit a long three bagger to drive-in a pair of runners in the 3rd inning when the Kardinals scored 7 runs.

...Smith Hurls a Gem as Kards Defeat Secaucus 1-0 In Kearny Invitational Tourney

Junior pitching ace Jennifer Smith posted her 32nd career pitching victory and first win of the season as the Kards blanked Secaucus 1-0. Smith worked all 7 innings, allowing just 3 hits, while fanning 5 Secaucus batters. The Kards tallied their only run in the bottom of the fifth inning. Shortstop Lauren Roemer laced a double to center to lead off the inning. She was moved to third base on a sacrifice bunt by catcher Gabby Antao; and scored on a safety squeeze bunt by Laura Correnti. The Kards win advanced them tothe championship game against North Bergen in the 2nd Annual Kearny Kards Invitational Softball Tournament.

.......Lady Kards clinch Kearny Invitational behind Warnock's 3-Hitter

Yesterday the Kearny High School girls softball team captured their second straight Kearny Kardinal Invitational Softball Tournament defeating both Secaucus and North Bergen.
In the final game it was all Kearny; as the Lady Kards defeated North Bergen H.S. 12-1 in a 5 inning game. Pitcher Dana Warnock starred on the mound, yielding just 3 hits and fanning 8 batters. There were multiple hitting stars in this game for Kearny. Junior second baseman, Kara Fassold had 3 singles and scored a pair of runs. Senior Margie Mendez had a couple of big hits, including a triple and a double, to drive in a run. Mendez also scored 3 runs in the game. Getting 2 hits apiece were Karla Rahner, Gabby Antao and Danielle Abbott. Rahner and Abbott each added a pair of r.b.i's on their hits. Catcher Gabriela Antao was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player for playing exceptional defense behind the plate and executing offensively when it was most needed by the Kards. The win improved the team's record to 3-2.

Game...6...Opponent...Plainfield H.S.

......................Rahner Simply Perfect as Kardinals Win 15-0.

Junior pitcher Karla Rahner tossed a perfect game yesterday, as the Lady Kards easily defeated Plainfield High School 15-0. Rahner who faced only 15 batters, struck-out 9 in route to her first varsity pitching victory. Rahner combined with junior catcher "Gabby" Antao to mix a combination of fastballs, change-ups and drops, which kept the Plainfield bats off balance all game.
The offensive attack was lead by senior co-captain Margie Mendez. Mendez had a great day at the plate for the Kardinals, going 2-3 with a single and a long 3 run homer to right-center in the top of the first inning. Gabby Antao and Danielle Abbott each hit doubles in the game, with Antao finishing the day with 3 r.b.i.'s. Desiginated hitter, Jennifer Smith singled in 2 runs in the second inning when the Lady Kards tallied 4 runs.

Game...7...Opponent...Hackensack H.S.

...................Smith Fires No-Hitter as Kards Down Hackensack 8-0

Junior pitcher Jennifer Smith tossed her first varsity no-hitter yesterday as the Lady Kards defeated Hackensack H.S. by a score of 8-0. Smith, who allowed only 5 players to reach base the entire game, had 4 strikeouts and yielded just 3 walks in the game. Once again senior second baseman Margie Mendez was the hitting star, collecting 3 hits, an r.b.i. and a run scored. Lauren Roemer, Gabby Antao and Karla Rahner each contributed 2 hits apiece in the game while Danielle Abbott Knocked in 3 runs. Jen Smith, Meghan Walsh and Mary Conklin also had basehits in the game.

...................Warnock Notches Lady Kards Third Straight No-Hitter

On Wednesday, sophomore pitcher Dana Warnock became the third Kearny High School pitcher to toss a no-hitter this season. Earlier in the week, junior Karla Rahner pitched a perfect game against Plainfield H.S. On Tuesday, junior co-captain Jen Smith handed Hackensack an 8-0 defeat, pitching a no-hitter. With the pressure on, Dana Warnock responded with the Kardinals third straight no-hitter of the week. Warnock worked all seven innings, allowing just 2 walks while fanning 12 Lyndhurst hitters as the Kards went on to win 6-0. For Warnock, it was her third straight pitching victory and first career no-hitter.
Once again junior catcher "Gabby" Antao had a great game. Not only did Antao call a great game from behind a plate, she also sparked the offensive attack for the Kardinals. Antao belted 3 hits, including a double, 2 singles and accounted for 2 r.b.i.'s. Shortstop Lauren Roemer had a clutch double to drive-in a run in the Kards fifth inning. Mary Conklin put the game out of reach in the sixth inning when she delivered a 2 run double. Desiginated hitter Kara Fassold had 2 safeties in the game for the Kards while Danielle Abbott added an r.b.i double in the 2nd inning.

...................Rahner 1-Hits Elizabeth as Kards Win 11-0

On Monday, junior pitcher Karla Rahner won her second game of the season by tossing a 1-hit shut-out against Elizabeth High School. Rahner fanned 9 batters while yielding 4 walks as the Lady Kards went on to win by a score of 11-0. Shortstop Lauren Roemer continued her "Hot Hitting," going 3-3 with a double, a pair of singles and 2 r.b.i's. Outfielder Natalie Capriglione had a double and a single and also scored 2 runs. Catcher Gabriela Antao doubled across a run in the second inning for the Kards.

Game...10...Opponent...Paramus High School

....................Kards Fall to Number 11 Paramus 3-2

Last Tuesday the Kards dropped a 3-2 decision to 11th ranked Paramus High School 3-2. Paramus held a 3-0 lead going into the top of the sixth when the Kardinals rallied for 2 runs. Dana Warnock reached on an infield hit and scored on a long triple by Margie Mendez. Lauren Roemer followed with a clutch single to score Mendez from third with the second run. In the seventh inning the Kards threatened when First baseman Danielle Abbott ripped a ball over the head of the Paramus right fielder but was thrown-out trying to make second base. Sophomore pitcher Dana Warnock who pitched another great game was tagged with the loss.

Game...11...Opponent...Newark East Side H.S.

.....................Smith's 2-Hitter Propells Kards Over East Side 10-0

On Wednesday Jennifer Smith picked-up her third win of the season when the Lady Kardinals blanked Newark East Side High 10-0. Smith worked 5 innings, allowing just 2 hits while fanning 7 batters. Once again Lauren Roemer was the hitting star going 2-3 with 4 ribbies. Catcher Gabby Antao had an r.b.i. single in the third inning when the Kards scored 4 runs. Outfielder Natalie Capriglione walked twice and scored a pair of runs in the game. The Kards improved their seasonal record to 8-3.

Game...12...Opponent...Whippany Park

....................Warnock Roemer lead Kards Past Whippany Park 4-2

On Friday night before a packed house at Veteran's Field the Kards defeated Whippany Park by a score of 4-2. Dana Warnock lead the Kards on the mound pitching another fantastic game. Warnock scattered 7 hits and struck-out 11 batters over 7 innings to record her third win. Shortstop Lauren Roemer again delivered a big hit for the Kards. With runners on second and third bases Roemer stroked a 3-2 pitch into left field to drive in both runs, giving the Kards a 3-1 lead. Roemer scored on the next pitch when Gabriela Antao laid down a perfectly executed safety squeeze bunt. Whippany Park scored a run in the top of sixth and threatened in the seventh but Warnock closed the door to hold onto the win.

Game...13...Opponent...Nutley High School

....................Nutley Subdues Kearny 10-0

Saturday night the Kardinals lost to Nutley High School by a score of 10-0. Sue Fleitell had 3 hits including a pair of triples to lead the Raiders offensive attack. For Kearny, Mary Conklin and Danielle Abbott each stroked a pair of hits. Jennifer Smith was tagged with her second loss of the season. The Kards ended their third full week of competition 3-2. The Team's record now stands at 9-4.


Game...14...Opponent...Shabazz High School

....................Kards Belt Shabazz 17-0 as Smith Wins 4th

Junior pitcher Jennifer Smith pitched a 3-hitter with 7 strikeouts as the Lady Kards blanked Shabazz 17-0. Leading the Redbirds offensive attack was second baseman Kara Fassold. Kara was 2-4 at the plate with 5 r.b.i.'s. Three of the 5 "ribbies" came home when she belted a homer in the second inning when the Kards scored 6 runs. Meghan Walsh also belted her first varsity homer in the second, going back to back with Fassold. Other Kearny players to pick-up hits and score runs were Jennifer Smith, Natalie Capriglione, Margie Mendez, Lauren Roemer,Mary Conklin, and Karla Rahner.

Game...15...Opponent...Scotch Plains High School

....................Correnti Warnock Lead Kardinals Over Scotch Plains

Outfielder Laura Correnti and pitcher Dana Warnock were the hitting and pitching stars in the Kards win over Scotch Plains by a score of 3-2. Correnti singled, stole second and scored a big run in the fourth inning. In the sixth inning she delivered the game winner, a one out double that scored Danielle Abbott from second base. Abbott who reached on a basehit,went to second base on a perfectly executed bunt by Dana Warnock. On the mound Dana Warnock continued her winning ways. Warnock scattered 4 hits, fanned 6 batters and did not issue a walk in the game. Senior team captain, Margie Mendez had a great day at the plate for the Kards going 3-3 with a pair of doubles. The "Redbirds" record improved to 11-4.
