There are many characters in Dragon Ball Z and some even transform. Here are some character profiles backed up with a picture of them.
DBZ FIGHTERS
 Goku- Goku is a saiyan who came here to Earth as a child. Since then he has proven that his power is incredible by defeating various foes like his brother Raditz, Vegeta, and Frieza. He even turned into a super-saiyan in his epic battle against Frieza. He is father to Gohan and trained in the art of Kao-Ken by King Kai. He has two great moves called Kamehameha and Spirit Bomb.
Gohan- Gohan is son to the powerful Goku and ChiChi. His mom ChiChi though, is always telling Gohan to study. Gohan once in a while shows true power various times against Frieza and when he defeats Garlic Jr. While Gohan is young he posesses great power that when he grows up could be unmatched.
Piccolo- Piccolo is a Namek and probably one of the strongest Nameks. While he does have a rivalry with Goku and is always ready to start a fight he always helps out the good guys by defeating their enemies. Piccolo was asked to take Kami's place in rule over Kami but Piccolo refused. He trained Gohan when Gohan was very young.
Krillin- Krillin is a very good friend to Goku and he is Martial arts partners with Gohan. Krillin is a human but also possesses great powers. Krillin has two devastating attacks. One is solar flare which blinds his opponents and the other is destructo disc which destroys anything in it's path. He is always there in a fight.
Vegeta- Even though Vegeta may be cruel-hearted at times he has helped the Z-fighters various times. One of the only Saiyans left who survived the destruction of Planet Vegeta he came to Earth with his partner Nappa but was defeated. But due to Goku's kind heart Vegeta was not killed. Vegeta then went on to Planet Namek looking for the dragon balls but ended up fighting with the good guys to defeat Frieza.
Chiaotzu- Chiaotzu is best buddies with Tien. He risked his life by commiting suicide and destroyin ghimself. Through the dragon balls though he was able to come back.
Tien- Tien is best buddies with Chiaotzu and also fought against Nappa. When he died he trained with King Kai and through the dragon balls came back. He has powers like his concentrated bombs.
Yamcha- Yamcha is another warrior that fought and lost his life but was able to come back via dragon balls. Bulma has a crush on him and has even proposed marriage to him even though Yamcha wasn't to willing to accept.
Nail- Nail was a Namek that stood ground against Frieza but lost. He protected Guru and when he was near death he fused with Piccolo.
Dende- A young Namek who is given the power to cure people by a dying Guru, uses his powers against the battle with Frieza and proves to be very useful before he dies. But he is able to be restored by the dragon balls.
Bad Guys
Frieza- Frieza is one tough bad-ass. He went to Namek in search for the dragon balls to make him immortal. But since he couldn't get them he killed off almost the whole race of Nameks! Frieza was then challenged by the Z fighters but Frieza was too much for them. That is until Super-Saiyan Goku came in. They had a fierce duel and at the end Frieza's own attack sliced him in half. Throughout all his transformation Goku still defeated him. But not before Frieza destoryed Planet Namek itself.
