What is Caffeine ?

An alkaloid stimulant found in tea leaves and coffee beans.
Present in coffee to the extent of about 4%. It stimulates both the heart and respiratory
systems yet relaxes smooth muscle...for what its worth.
Caffeine : 1,3,7-trimethylxanthine, (a methylated purine derivative).

How much caffeine is present in a cup of coffee ?
Average amounts of caffeine in a (7 oz) of coffee :

Drip - 115-175mg

Espresso - 100mg per serving (1.5-2oz)

Brewed - 80-135mg

Instant-65-100mg

Decaf, brewed - 3-4mg

Decaf, instant - 2-3mg

tea, iced (12oz) - 70mg

tea, brewed - 40-60mg

tea instant - 30mg

The following is the caffeine content in mg per 330ml can drink:

Mountain Dew - 55mg

Coke/Diet Coke - 45.6mg

Pepsi - 37.2mg

Diet Pepsi - 35.4mg

Does caffeine have any effects on pregnant women ?
Caffeine has long been suspect of causing mal-formations in fetus, and that it may reduce
fertility rates. These reports have proved controversial. On men, it has been shown that caffeine
reduces rates of sperm mobility which may account for some findings of reduced fertility.

What are the side-effects of caffeine ?
A major study has found fewer suicides among coffee drinkers than those who abstained from
the hot black brew. This is not a fluke finding because the study was very large, involved a
multiracial population, men, women, and examined closely numerous factors related to
mortality such as alcohol consumption and smoking. The unique survey also found no link
between coffee consumption and death risk. And it confirmed a 'weak' connection of coffee or
tea to heart attack risk -- but not to other cardiovascular conditions such as stroke.

What are the effects of caffeine on your metabolism ?
Caffeine increases the level of circulating fatty acids. This has been shown to increase the
oxidation of these fuels, hence enhancing fat oxidation. Caffeine has been used for years by
runners and endurance people to enhance fatty acid metabolism. It's particularly effective in
those who are not habitual users.
