"The Mexican"
``The Mexican,'' which took a short siesta when director David Fincher and Brad Pitt said adios, has again gained momentum. ``Mouse Hunt'' director Gore Verbinski is now at the helm, and DreamWorks is in talks to distribute, but it's the possible cast combination that has Hollywood abuzz. Julia Roberts had a meeting on the project and has sparked to the material. She's contemplating taking the lead in the $10 million film scripted by J.H. Wyman. There is no male lead at present, but if Roberts says yes, many predict Pitt will resurface as her onscreen match. The producers may have to rework the numbers since salaries for Roberts and Pitt reportedly hover in the $20 million range. ``The Mexican'' is an action-comedy centering on a sweet-natured criminal who's being pressured by his girlfriend to find another line of work. He struggles with the prospect of taking one final job: stealing the title character, an ancient pistol south of the border which is thought to be cursed. Info: Variety

"Ocean's Eleven"
Director Steven Soderbergh, whose movies include Out of Sight, The Limey and Julia Roberts' new drama Erin Brockovich, has been signed for the remake of Ocean's Eleven. The original 1960 Las Vegas heist comedy was a showcase for Frank Sinatra and his Rat Pack friends. He's already signed up George Clooney to play the Sinatra role and Brad Pitt has said he'll take a huge pay cut to get on board. "I sent the screenplay to Julia for the Angie Dickinson role but I haven't heard back from her," says Soderbergh. Roberts insists she just teasing Soderbergh. "I have every intention of being in the film, but I'm going to make him work for my signature in retaliation for not giving me a role in his next movie Traffic," says Roberts. Traffic is based on a BBC mini-series about the repercussions of drug trafficking. Soderbergh has cast Catherine Zeta-Jones, who is to wed Michael Douglas. "I was devastated when I read that Catherine was pregnant, but she called and asked if there was any way she could remain in the film," says Soderbergh. "She plays the wife of an industrialist who used to be a huge drug runner. "It took nothing for the writers to make her character pregnant." Soderbergh has also cast Harrison Ford as one of the leading drug prosecutors. Info: Jam Movies

"America's Sweethearts"
Premise: After they've broken up, a married movie star couple (Cusack, Zeta-Jones) still have to go out and promote the movie they made together while they were in love, even though they now detest each other. To keep the junket from falling apart when the print of their film doesn't show up, the film's publicist (Crystal) tries to divert attention by concocting the story of the couple's reunion, that everything's still hunky-dory between them... when in fact, the actor is actually in love with his wife's formerly fat sister (Roberts), and the actress has found a new beau named Hector (Downey, Jr.).
Release date is set for July 4th, 2001

"Project 3"
Not much is known about this film yet, except that it's compared to George Cukor's 1944 classic, Gaslight, and it's set in New York City. What does this tell us? Gaslight, set during the Victorian Era (hence the title) told the tale of a woman whose husband is trying to drive her insane. There's still many questions here. Does the Gaslight comparison mean this is also set during the Victorian Era, for example? (Memories of Mary Reilly come to mind, if it does.) Also, will Project 3 have the same reason for the husband driving the wife insane? In Gaslight, he was actually a jewel thief who married this girl so he could get access to the house where her dead aunt's valuable jewels are hidden. (Martin Lawrence's Blue Streak actually had this plot device in common with Gaslight.) You can find out more about Gaslight at the Greatest Films site. Production starts on this movie on April 1st, 2001. Julia Roberts will have a busy spring, coming onto this project after wrapping Ocean's 11 and America's Sweethearts. It is also said that Aaron Eckhart (Erin Brockovich will star in this movie, too.
Release will probably be late 2001, early 2002.
