Plot: In "The Mexican," Brad Pitt stars as Jerry Welbach, a reluctant bagman who has been given two ultimatums. The first is from his mob boss to travel to Mexico to retrieve a priceless antique pistol known as "the Mexican"... or to suffer the consequences. The second is from his girlfriend, Samantha (Julia Roberts), to end his association with the mob. Jerry figures alive and in trouble with Samantha is better than the more permanent alternative, so he heads south of the border.
Finding the pistol proves easy. Getting it home is another matter. The pistol supposedly carries a legendary curse--a legend Jerry is given every reason to believe, especially when Samantha is taken hostage by a hit man (James Gandolfini) to ensure the safe return of the pistol.

Principal photography began on Monday, April 17, 2000 on DreamWorks Pictures' and Newmarket Group's action-comedy "The Mexican," under the direction of Gore Verbinski. The film marks the first pairing of two-time Academy Award nominee and Golden Globe winner Julia Roberts, who recently ruled the box office as the star of the true-life drama "Erin Brockovich," and Oscar nominee and Golden Globe-winning actor Brad Pitt. The film also stars James Gandolfini, the star of HBO's award-winning series "The Sopranos."
"The Mexican" follows the ill-fated travels of Jerry Welbach (Brad Pitt), a reluctant bagman who has a score to settle with a crime kingpin and, even more dangerous, his girlfriend Samantha Barzel (Julia Roberts). Jerry is sent to Mexico to retrieve a priceless antique pistol, known as The Mexican, which is allegedly cursed - a legend. Jerry is beginning to believe as his plans to recover the gun unravel and his life, not to mention Samantha's, are on the line.
The main cast also includes J.K. Simmons, Bob Balaban, David Krumholtz, Richard Coca, Michael Cerveris and Sherman Augustus.
Gore Verbinski, who made his feature film directorial debut on DreamWorks' hit comedy "Mouse Hunt," is directing "The Mexican" from an original screenplay by J.H. Wyman. The film is being produced by two-time Oscar-nominated producer Lawrence Bender ("Good Will Hunting," "Pulp Fiction") and John Baldecchi ("Simon Birch"). Newmarket principals William Tyrer, Chris J. Ball & Aaron Ryder, and J.H. Wyman are serving as executive producers, with Paul Hellerman ("Jackie Brown") co-producing.
The behind the scenes talent includes director of photography Dariusz Wolski ("Crimson Tide," "A Perfect Murder"), production designer Cecilia Montiel ("The Mask of Zorro," "Desperado"), three-time Academy Award-nominated costume designer Colleen Atwood ("Sleepy Hollow," "Beloved," "Little Women") and editor Craig Wood ("Mouse Hunt," "Forces of Nature").
Filming got underway on location in Mexico, with future location shooting to take place in Los Angeles and Las Vegas.

Premise: A bungling gangster (Pitt) has promised his girlfriend (Roberts) that he'll go straight, but first he has to do one last job for his boss: secure a "cursed" antique pistol known as The Mexican. (Krumholtz plays the grandson of a mobster that Pitt is assigned to retrieve)
Homage Note: One of the characters in the movie is a young man by the name of Beck, who lives in Mexico. I can't help but wonder if this is an homage to the song "Mexico" by Beck, which is about a young guy who flees to Mexico after a crime spree.
Filming: Production started on this movie on April 17th, 2000, with locations to include Mexico, Las Vegas, and Los Angeles. (7/18/00) Filming wrapped in early July, 2000.
Genres: Action, Comedy, Crime
Script Review: FlixBurg, USA (As with any script review, you should note that this is of a draft from 1998, so it's possible that it may differ from the final product. Also, this particular review is filled to the gills with spoilers, so you might want to read with care).

Anyone who has seen director Gore Verbinski's debut film, Mouse Hunt, probably has a pretty good idea about the sort of Tim-Burton-esque darkly-tuned comedy he's capable of (and that was a kids movie!), so now you just have to imagine that style slapped around a crime heist movie starring Brad Pitt and Julia Roberts, and you might be headed in the right direction. The Mexican will mark the first of two heist movies that Pitt and Roberts will be costarring in, with Ocean's 11 coming after this movie possibly by just a few months. This move towards crime comedies is especially new for Julia Roberts, who has become more known for romantic comedies (Notting Hill), but it appears she's looking to stretch out a bit.
(4/26/00) Filming started last week, and with that news came several more names for the cast. (9/23/00) DreamWorks has chosen a release date of March 2nd, 2001.
(2/18/01) Julia and Brad were on AOL Live today, talking about "The Mexican"
