Fasting is usually practiced for health and/or spiritual reasons. Many physicians from the Greek golden age like Hippocrates, Socrates and Plato, among others, fasted for health. Christ fasted for spiritual enlightenment as did Moses while writing the Ten Commandments.

Much of our energy is used for digestion. In fact more energy is used for digestion than any other activity. Fasting allows us to rest our digestive system. The energy typically used to digest food is directed towards body healing and a heightened spiritual experience.

Fasting also allows us to cleanse the body, rid our system of toxins resulting from the ingestion of refined and processed foods and exposure to environmental pollutants.

Short term fasting, one to three days, drinking water, vital juices, broth and herbal teas is typically used for the treatment of colds, flu, infectious diseases and toxic conditions of all kinds.

People experience sharper senses and clearer heads after only one day of fasting. They report lighter bodies and feel more energetic. Fasting beyond three days should be supervised by a physician experienced in this treatment. Many claim that juice fasting is far superior to water and herbal tea fasting and results in much faster recovery from disease.

If suffering from hypoglycemia, depression or schizophrenia, decrease amount of fruit juices and increase amount of vegetable juices. After the first 24 hours, it is recommended to take an enema (or take advantage of any colonic facilities in your area) to expel toxins from the colon and prevent reabsorption of toxins into your bloodstream. Also important while fasting is to drink plenty of water to help move toxins through the urinary system and prevent constipation.

During a fast, remove yourself from stress and do not continue your usual exercise program. Prevent becoming chilled since body temperature drops while fasting.

Breaking a fast is the most important phase. Since the hydrochloric acid in the stomach may be weak care should be taken not to overeat. Start with small amounts of fresh fruit and vegetables. Chew food slowly and well. Advance the diet gradually. This will be a good opportunity to change your eating habits to include a healthier diet, particularly an abundance of raw plant food.
