Love and Jealousy - Chapter two: Strangers No More (PG13) By: Melody

" Where is that meatball head?! She's always late! " A raven haired
priestess complained, her violet eyes questioning those of her friends. " I
don't know. Probably at the arcade or something. "
Lita shrugged, her brown bangs falling upon her jade eyes. Amy cleared her
throat slightly, her blue eyes focused an a book she was reading. " I think
that she's just probably studying for an exam....." Her sentence was cut off
as she noticed the looks her friends were giving her that clearly stated
'Yeah right, Amy. That will be the day.' Blushing slightly, she cleared her
throat again and shifted uncomfortably. " But.....I could be wrong. She
might have detention...."
"... Again. " Mina cut off, her slim fingers playing with a blonde strand.
Rei sighed, her eyes focusing on the street. It was covered in golden
leaves and a few cherry blossoms scattered in some areas. Looking up, she
watched the autumn leaves fall to the ground.
A golden leaf fell off a tree branch, swiftly floating along with the cool
breeze and landed at her feet. Rei watched the little leaf with tired eyes,
wondering when Serena would arrive.
Stomping her foot on the ground, she growled. The other girls stared at
her, surprised at the sudden change of mood. Rei gripped the rake she was
holding with such force, it seemed like it could break any second. " That
meatball head! She's suppose to be here right now, helping me rake these
leaves! " Mina sighed and stood up, taking the rake from Rei's hands. "
Listen, even if Serena was here and we're all helping you rake them...it
would be fruitless. It's autumn, Rei. Leaves will keep falling until the
season's over. It's no use cleaning them up and coming back to find a new
set of leaves. Just relax and we'll all help you rake the leaves by the end
of autumn. "
Rei growled, steam rising from her ears. " I know that, Mina! But by the
time autumn's over then grandpa's temple is going to be a leaf dump! We'll
have leaves that could reach our roof if we don't do something. By the time
the season's over, it will be impossible to clean! "
Mina sighed, looking at the rake in her hand. " True....but we have to do
something. We can't just let you tire yourself. " Looking at the two other
girls, Mina's eyes asked them what to do but both girls gave no answer.
Instead, everyone stayed where they were and remained motionless. At that
moment, all they could seem to do was be still and watch the leaves fall
down.
They felt like statues that were being covered in golden paint.
The silence was broken when a blonde female ran up the steps, breathless
and weak. Serena leaned on the bark of a tree and sank down, a sly grin on
her lips. " Serena? " Mina asked, walking over to the breathless girl. " Are
you alright? What's wrong? And why are you smiling? "
Serena giggled and stood up, her weak legs trembling and her tongue slightly
sticking out. If it weren't her friends she was with, then people would
surely have thoght she was a demented moron who was breathless and happy
because she ran away from the mental hospital.
Serena half walked, half crawled over to the other girls and sat herself
down beside Lita who was eyeing her suspiciously. " Serena, are you okay? "
Serena nodded cheerfully and sighed.
" Meatball brains, where were you?! You you were suppose to be here half an
hour ago! " Rei scolded, the rake in her hands trembling along with her
anger. Serena didn't even seem to notice the feiry tempered girl was beside
her, and kept staring off into outer space, a silly grin on her lips and her
blue eyes filled with doubt. As if part of her felt something strange and
the other was different.
Tapping her foot, Rei clenched her fists and yelled. " Serena! What is
wrong with you?! Didn't you hear a word I just said?! " Serena remained the
same, not blinking at all. Rei began to feel worried. " Serena, please
talk. " Serena remained the same, except for a tiny movement from her lips.
She mumbled something that was beyond their hearing ranges and each of the
girls found themselves leaning over to listen to what she just said. She
seemed to be asking herself why she did something and what just came over
her. The girls stared at her in confusion, growing impatient from her quiet
voice.
Rei began to grow red. Clenching her fists, she stomped her foot on the
ground, sending a flock of crows to fly up from a tree. This movement simply
caused more leaves to fall down. Rei looked at the falling leaves,
dumbfounded at first, not sure as to what just happened. When it finally hit
her, she growled, her eyes burning with anger. " Argh!!! The leaves are
falling again! Dammit! " The girls stared at her except for Serena, who was
still in space.
Angrily walking to her, Rei placed her hands on her sides and glared at
the blonde headed girl. She dropped the rake on Serena's lap and ordered, "
Serena, clean the leaves! You were suppose to be here half an hour ago to
help me and I ended up doing all the work! Now do your part of the job and
clean! "
Serena's eyes focused from the sky to Rei's angry face. Her expression
were blank at first, then frightened until a sparkle came to her eyes. Of
all the things they expected her to do, she did the unexpected.....she
smiled. Rei didn't seem to know why she just did what she just did and
simply stared at the girl before her as if she had just grown another head.
Worry took place.
" Serena, what's wrong? Why are you smiling? " Serena grinned at her and
shook her head.
" Nothing's wrong, Rei. I'm just.....happy. " Rei began to grow impatient
again but held her voice back. " And why are happy? " She asked in a low
voice, trying to hold back each rising tone. Serena seemed to notice this
but paid no attention. " Because, I just took revenge. "
That caught all their attention as the girls stared at her in shock. Lita
nearly chocked on the drink she was drinking and Mina accidentaly pulled the
strand she playing with, off. Amy practically tore part of the page she was
turning and began to turn blue with worry. Rei did nothing except stare. "
You what?! " They asked in unision, not believing what they just heard.
Serena simply kept grinning. " I said, I took revenge....on Darien. "
Rei's jaw dropped to the ground and found herself sitting down beside
Serena, laying one hand on her forehead. " Serena, are you sick or
something? We know that you can never take revenge, especially on Darien. Is
something wrong? " Serena growled in annoyance. " No! Nothing is wrong! How
many times must I tell you that?! Just because I didn't like revenge, that
doesn't mean I can't change. Besides....." Lowering her tone, a mischivouse
sparkle forming in her eyes.
".....Revenge is fun. Especially if it's done to the person you hate most of
all. "
Rei didn't seem to believe it and crossed her arms. " Well then, care to
tell us what exactly happened? " Serena grinned and nodded eagerly. She
shifted uncomfortably as a flash of guilt crossed her expressions but was
erased as quickly as it had come. " Sure. Well, it kinda started when...."
Serena began with her story, telling ever single detail she remembered.
The girls listened eagerly as the leaves began piling up at their feet and
seemed to listen as well. Serena kept talking, never stopping to let any of
the girls ask a question and kept going until she finished the end. But she
didn't tell them anything about the diamond-like stick because she knew that
they would just want to see it and it would be total waste of time. She
didn't need their pointless objections about a harmless object. So she just
finished her story and skipped that little detail.
" You actually did that?! " Mina yelled, her voice filled with disbelief.
" Serena, what in the world made you do this? " Lita demanded, though her
tone didn't match what she had in mind. Serena nodded and leaned back,
grabbing a glass of water to moisten her dry throat. Amy and Rei both seemed
to ponder, their eyes unmoving. Rei narrowed her eyes at Serena, suspicion
growing.
" So you ran all the way over here because you felt guilty, right? "
" Yeah. "
" If you really liked revenge, just as you mentioned, then why would you
feel guilty? "
" I don't know. Something just came over me when I took revenge. After that,
I just felt guilty. "
" Serena, I don't think it's possible for emotions to just take full control
and suddenly change. "
" Of course it's possible, Rei! "
" True.....but in this case, it's kinda unbelievable. It kinda makes me
suspicious. "
" Suspicious?! Rei, what's gotten into your mind? "
" Nothing, Serena. What's gotten into yours? "
Silence......
" My thoughts exactly. "
" What do you mean?! "
" I mean, this is exactly what I thought. "
" Argh! I know that but what do you mean by that?! "
" I mean that while you were telling us your story, I had suspicions.
Besides, you were too harsh."
" What kind of suspicions? "
" Suspicions that told me that perhaps something evil took over you. "
Laughter......" Yeah right, Rei! Why would something stupid like that
happen? "
" That's what I'm trying to figure out. "
" Oh, c'mon, Rei! You've been meditating too much. "
" I do not meditate too much! Besides, if you think my idea is silly then do
you have any other? "
" What do you mean? "
" Do you have any other reasonable opinion that you think might be the cause
of this? "
" Sure! And it's reasonable enough. "
" Fine! Let's hear it. "
" People change, Rei. I'm human so it's normal for me to change. That's my
opinion. "
" And you think that's reasonable?! "
" Of course! I'de be scared if I didn't change. Besides, it's only normal
for changes in mood. "
" That's true, Serena....but people don't change this quickly. Face it,
Serena. This is wierd. "
" If it is then why do your moods change so quickly? "
" I've always been this way! And your case is different, Serena. Stop trying
to dodge the topic. "
" I'm not! "
" Then stop trying to defend yourself! "
" What do you expect me to do?! Sit here and let you give the wrong
opinions?! "
" No. I expect you to stop giving such unreasonable opinions. "
" My opinions are not unreasonable! "
" Think about it, Serena! Why would your mood suddenly change in a second?
It's unusual. "
" Well maybe I've already had too much! Maybe Darien went too far this time.
Maybe I've had it! "
" But that still doesn't explain this. "
" Rei, it's only normal for humans to blow up! You can't expect me to stay
the same forever! "
Sighing, Rei shot her friend a hopeless glance, knowing that arguing with
her was pointless. She would let her think what she wants but she was going
to get to the bottom of this thing. If not that then at least she should
know the cause of the quick change of moods. It may not sound reasonable
right now and perhaps Serena could be right. But Serena's opinion was highly
doubted.
Rei flashed the others a knowing glance then turned to Serena. " Fine!
Think what you want. But I still think that what you did was a little too
harsh. It's not like you. "
Serena sighed, and stood up. " This conversation is pointless, Rei. Think
what you want but I'm leaving! Just because I used to be a crybaby that
doesn't mean I can't stand up for myself anymore. But seeing that you'll
always think of me as a crybaby, I'll just let you think what you want and
feel sorry when you realize I'm right. Good-bye, Rei. And don't blame me
when you find out I'm right. " Turning around, Serena headed for home,
leaving four shocked girls behind.
~
A wave of guilt suddenly flashed through her mind as Serena walked past
fallen golden leaves and trees and a few people. She didn't exactly want to
pass the main street since she didn't really feel like having to squeeze
through a million people. So she decided to take the long way where fewer
people past....and where a smaller chance of meeting Darien existed.
Leaning on a tree, Serena brought her hand to her forehead, trying to
ignore her guilty conscience and a wave of nausea that just flashed through
her trembling body. Visons swirled around in her mind though she couldn't
determine what they were. Her knees began to feel like bubble gum and
finally gave way. Falling to the ground, she looked up, her visions swirling
around.
Her body shaked uncontrolably as coldness swept over her. A cold breeze
blew past her arm like a sword slicing her flesh. Her back seemed to turn
into ice as the nausea was replaced by fear. The cold daggers of fear
stabbed her back as another cold breeze past her already numb body. Looking
up, she noticed that no one else seemed to notice the cool feeling and
hardly anyone even noticed that she was cold. But her visions blurred once
again as it was taken over by total darkness. The coldness was replaced by
sudden warmth as a dark figure approached her vision. Warmth filled her
nerves but even with the sudden rise of tempreture...she still felt cold
inside.
Looking up, her tired blue eyes met bright green ones as her vision
blackened completly....leading into total darkness.
