WELCOME+TO+THE+JIM+CORBETT+FOUNDATION! established in Canada in 1994 by Jerry Alexander Jaleel F.R.G.S. The Foundation is registered as a NON PROFIT ORGANIZATION in Canada, after we repaired and restored the ever neglected grave of Colonel Corbett and his sister Maggie in Kenya, East Africa. Please note that Jim Corbett's books are still being reprinted by the Oxford University Press in India. The BBC made a docudrama depicting a portion of Corbett's life, the National Geographic Society distributed the 90 minute film in North America. But the writer who sought my help in preparing the script for the BBC production of the said docudrama and a publisher in California who reprinted Corbett's books, the National Geographic Society, or the Oxford University Press- all of them had benefited through Corbett - were NOT interested in lifting a finger to restore Corbett's grave despite the appeals. In April 2002, the Corbett grave was restored again with concrete inside the marble frames and gravel around it to avoid the growth of weeds and to protect the grave from further damages caused by rain and soil erosion.

MEMBERS WELCOME

The primary object of the Foundation is to keep the memory of Jim Corbett alive.
TIGER-TRAILS -a newsletter is published 4 times a year and sent free to all members worldwide.(Non members cost $5.00) Members are encouraged to contribute to the newsletter with photos and brief texts for publication. It also carries sections on book reviews and a page dedicated to the biography of a well known person of interest to Corbett readers. In the past, tributes were published on F.W. Champion (who inspired Corbett in animal photography), George and Joy Adamson, E.P. Gee, Dr.Salim Ali, Kenneth Anderson, Sir Henry Ramsay (the King of Kumaon), Eric Risley (a former DC for Tanganyika and Kenya and a close friend of Corbett during his Kenya days), C.J.P. Ionides (the Snakeman), Alasdair Ramsay Tainsh M.B.E., J.A. Hunter, Robert Foran, R.J. Prickett (1917-2003), Maurice Nestor (1907-2003), Sir Wilfred Thesiger, Maggie Corbett, Sir. William Ibbotson and others. See 'HOW TO JOIN" paragraph below for details.

Those who are familiar with Corbett's six books would know what kind of a man he was. He risked his own life time and time again to save other human beings- mostly the poor villagers living in the isolated patches near the Himalayan jungles- from the marauding man eating tigers and leopards that roamed freely in that part of India in the early part of the 20th century. The Champawat man eating tigress, for example killed more than 400 people before Corbett managed to track her down. The Panar man eater, a leopard, was credited with 400 human kills, The man eating leopard of Rudraprayag had at least 125 people for dinner before Corbett put an end to its career with 'a shot in the dark' from a mango tree in Gulabrai in 1926. Then there were the Muktesar man eater, Kanda man eater, Chowgarh man eaters, The Tala-des-maneater, the Chuka man eater and many others.

The British government in India at the time posted huge rewards for killing these man eaters, and many sportsmen unsuccessfully tried to hunt down these animals. Corbett never accepted any rewards. To him, shooting these disabled animals was an obligation. He loved the poor, and gave himself freely. He helped the poor, the sick and the unfortunate all his life. He was a great humanitarian, giving away the bulk of the money he earned from his books to the poor people of India and Kenya. His sister Maggie too, was keen in helping the poor throughout her life.

Maggie was mentioned by Corbett in his books, at different times: Fishing with Maggie, Walking in the jungle paths with Maggie, Sending telegrams to Maggie to let her know his whereabouts during the hunt.. The sister and brother were inseparable. The only two of the members remaining in India during the last days of the Raj. Others had died or moved away to other parts of the world.

When India became independent in 1947, Corbett and Maggie also decided to leave India. Most of their friends were leaving the country too. India was in turmoil and they didn't feel safe as there were a lot of 'anti-British' feelings at the time.. Although they would have been safe in Naini Tal, Corbett left for Kenya, taking his trophies and rifles with him. Finally they settled down in a cottage called "Paxtu"- previously occupied by Lord Baden Powell- in the grounds of the Outspan Hotel in Nyeri, 100 miles north of Nairobi, Kenya.

He had already published his first book, Man eaters of Kumaon in 1944, and left his manuscript The Man eating Leopard of Rudraprayag with his editor Roy Hawkins at the O.U.P. While in Kenya, he wrote "My India", Jungle Lore, The Temple Tiger and more man eaters of Kumaon, and finally in 1955 "Tree-Tops". The last one being his recollections of princess Elizabeth's visit to the 'Treetops" in February 1952. While she was watching the game there, her father, King George VI had died, and thus the princess climbed down the tree as the Queen

On 6th April 1955, he finished writing the little book- Treetops. He was constantly sick due to breathing the volcanic dust and a lifetime of chain smoking. On the 19th of April, he died of a massive heart attack in the Mount Kenya Hospital, across from the Outspan. He was buried at the St. Peter's Anglican Church- about a mile from where he lived, the next day. In his will he wished to be cremated.

Maggie looked after his grave faithfully. She was two years older than Jim. She wanted to see a proper biography written about her brother. She compiled nearly 100 pages on Jim with the help of Miss Honor Walker (now Mrs.Hurly), and was given to Geoffrey Cumberlege- the then publisher to the OUP, along with numerous personal letters from Jim, photographs and telegrams sent by Jim to Maggie. But the book was never written, as Cumberlege changed his mind! Disappointed here, Maggie sought the help of Ruby Beyts, wife of Brig.Gen. Geoff Beyts to write a bio of Jim. These notes gathered dust until a writer from India, D.C.Kala obtained them for his book, Jim Corbett of Kumaon. In December 1963, Kenya became independent.Maggie was nearing 90. She was admitted to the hospital in December, where she died on the Boxing day. Her body was sent to Nairobi for cremation, and the ashes were intered into Jim's grave. Even in death, the brother and sister shared the same site.

Corbett was unmarried, and so was Maggie. Many of their friends had either died or left Kenya after it's gaining the independence (Uhuru). Corbett's grave wasn't looked after properly from this time on, and by the 1980s it began to show the signs of deterioration, and by 1993 it reached a pathetic condition. To prevent further damage, an attempt was made in 1994 when Jerry Jaleel went to Kenya and restored Corbett's grave with the help of the late professional hunter and Kenya Game Warden R.J. Prickett. It was then decided that a foundation should establish in Corbett's name and look after his grave on a regular basis. The Jim Corbett Foundation was this estanlished in 1994, and it attracted applications for membership from around the world. Encouraged by this, the Foundation published a comprehensive biography of Corbett titled UNDER THE SHADOW OF MAN EATERS: THE LIFE & LEGEND OF JIM CORBETT written by Jerry Jaleel as a limited edition of 1000 numbered copies signed by the author.

Now you have an idea about the origins of the Jim Corbett Foundation. Jim Corbett had done wonderful things for the poor people. A person of such calibre should be remembered by our children and grandchildren. We are living in an era where compassion is being replaced by materialism; love is being replaced by greed; service is replaced by harassment. Everywhere we look, we see how stressful our lives are. The employers lost their personal touch with their employees who became just numbers..The larger companies constantly swallowing up the smaller ones and laying of 1000s of workers daily. The banks are making hefty profits by overcharging their customers. We are living in such a hurried pace, we don't even take a moment to say hello to an old friend until it is too late..

Jim Corbett was different. He shared 80 percent of his bonus with his workers. He built houses in his property and gave to the poor, free of charge. He nursed the sick and gave money to the very sick to go to hospital. He willed most of his fortune to the needy. He was always cheerful, and never complained. His six books are classics and still widely printed and read.

THE JIM CORBETT MUSEUM & NATURE CENTRE

OUR FUTURE PLANS include the creation of a Jim Corbett Nature Center & Museum and a members' reading room. The museum will display various editions of Corbett's books, including those SIGNED by JIM CORBETT that we hope to acquire, his letters. photographs and other personnel effects in addition to some of the trophies he had collected. ANY ONE WISH TO donate any items that might be of interest to the above cause, please contact the foundation immediately. In most cases, we can pay the shipping charges. Many people will admire such items if it is kept in a place like this to keep Corbett's memory alive.

FAQS:

1. I have read Jim Corbett's "Man eaters of Kumaon" many years ago. I know he wrote more books. Are they available through the Corbett Foundation?
Answer: Yes, of course. Please ask for a price list + postage to your country by writing to jimcorbattfoundation@shaw.ca
2. I live in England, and We have a mounted tiger head in our home. It was brought by my grandfather from India while he was stationed there in the 1940s. Can we donate this to the Corbett Foundation for their museum.
Answer: Sure, you may. But before mailing it we will have to get CITES permission from both countries, one from UK to export the specimen to Canada and one from Canada to import it from the UK, as tigers are endangered species. Shipping within Canada is not a problem.
3. We are planning to make a documentary about Jim Corbett. Can you help?
Answer: Most certainly, as the Jim Corbett Foundation has a wealth of information on Corbett's life, and will be glad to share with any production company for a mutually negotiated amount of donation as well as due acknowledgements in the documentary.
