Mormonism: The Latter Day Saint movement is one of a number of separate movements, known collectively as Restorationism, intending to transcend Protestant denominationalism, and to restore a form of Christianity thought to be truer to the New Testament. The church founded by Joseph Smith, Jr. was first known as the Church of Christ. After Smith's death in 1844, the movement divided into several groups, the largest of which, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church) migrated to Utah!
Mormonism: Is in my belief fundamentally wrong because it's premise is "restorationism" coming on the heals of a biblical
gospel that has changed nothing in all the years since the Apostle Paul (Saul of Tarsus)
addressed the Churches of Asia specifically "Galatia or Corinth!" Let us look at what Paul said!
"Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:"
(1 Corinthians 15:1-4)
The Bible currently being the most verifiable scriptural
evidence of Christianity in book form we have today,it verifies and expounds Paul's teachings to Christians! To grasp Mormonism at it's core you would have to discard some of the teachings Paul esposed and add some other things that cannot be confirmed in it's pages! You see we know for a fact by Paul's letter to the Galatians that the Gospel he preached was in fact completed as he refers to it ".......rooted in the faith which ye have been taught!" Mormons themselves are not bad people they just aren't examining closely what Paul
said! Believing Mormonism is not far from Christianity or that it is even the same thing is entirely possible unless, you know
what sound doctrine teaches and you are entirely familiar with Mormonisms teachings!
In fact the problem arises when Joseph Smith says he has a new revelation with the addition
of three new cannons of scripture "The Pearl of Great Price!,The Book of Mormon and Doctrines and Covenants! Scripturally I cannot accept this as proper because these books
and documents don't ascribe to the Biblical testimony of the Disciples! Plurality of God and his relation to the claims that he is not the only God and that Mormons believe that they become Gods is biblically heretical!
FACT 1. The Mormon Church teaches ALL other Churches are WRONG; ALL their creeds are an ABOMINATION in the sight of God; and ALL their teachers are CORRUPT.
One of the Mormon Books of Scripture, The Pearl of Great Price, says this about non-LDS churches: "...they were ALL WRONG; and the Personage who addressed me said that ALL their creeds were an ABOMINATION in his sight; that those professors were ALL CORRUPT " (Joseph Smith, 2:19)
FACT 2. Mormonism teaches theres no salvation outside the Mormon Church and without accepting Joseph Smith.
Apostle Bruce R. McConkie makes this statement: "If it had not been for Joseph Smith and the restoration, there would be no salvation. There is no salvation outside The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints." (Mormon Doctrine pg.670)
The Bible, on the other hand, teaches salvation is in Jesus alone: "Neither is there salvation in any other [Jesus]: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved." (Ac.4:12)
FACT 3. Mormons are taught to doubt the reliability of the Bible and their leaders have consistently attacked its accuracy.
Joseph Smith claimed: "it was apparent that many important points touching the salvation of men, had been taken from the Bible, or lost before it was compiled." (Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith pg.10)
The Bible answers this attack: "The grass withereth, the flower fadeth: but the word of our God shall stand for ever." (Isa.40:8)
FACT 4. A basic tenant in Mormonism today is that Jesus Christ is the brother of Satan.
Milton R. Hunter writes: "The appointment of Jesus to be the Savior of the world was contested by one of the other sons of God. He was called Lucifer... this spirit-brother of Jesus desperately tried to become the Savior of mankind." (The Gospel Through The Ages pg.15)
Nowhere in the Bible does it indicate that Lucifer attempted to become the Saviour: in fact, Jesus created Satan, so they can't be brothers. Col.1:16 indicates that Jesus created "all things" whether "in heaven" or "in earth, visible or invisible".
FACT 5. Mormonism continues to teach that God the Father is a glorified, resurrected man, and men and women may become Gods and Goddesses.
Apostle Bruce R. McConkie claimed: "God himself, the Father of us all, is a glorified, exalted, immortal, resurrected Man!" (Mormon Doctrine pg.643)
Joseph Smith, the founder of Mormonism, taught: "you have got to learn how to be Gods yourselves ... the same as all Gods have done before you" (Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith pg.346)
The Lord Himself answers this teaching by pronouncing: "I am the first, and I am the last; and beside me there is no God" (Isa.44:6)
FACT 6. Mormons consider Polygamy a righteous principle which will he practiced in heaven.
Although there is nothing in the Bible that will support this thinking, current Mormon Scripture has this to say: "A any man espouse a virgin, and desire to espouse another, and the first give her consent, and if he espouse the second, and they are virgins, and have vowed to no other man, then is he justified; he cannot commit adultery.... And if he have TEN VIRGINS given unto him by this law, he cannot commit adultery" (Doctrine and Covenants 132:61, 62)
FACT 7. Mormons today believe God the Father is married and past leaders have taught both God the Father and Jesus Christ are polygamists.
'Apostle' Orson Pratt states: "the great Messiah who was the founder of the Christian religion, was a Polygamist the Messiah chose to take upon himself his seed; and by marrying many honorable wives himself, show to all future generations that he approbated the plurality of Wives under the Christian dispensation God the Father had a plurality of wives .the Son followed the example of his Father both God the Father and our Lord Jesus Christ inherit their wives in eternity as well as in time" (The Seer pg.172)
Nowhere in the Bible does it indicate that God the Father and Jesus Christ are married or polygamists.
FACT 8. The majority of the activity in the Mormon Temples in work done in behalf of the DEAD.
Joseph Smith offers this explanation: "The greatest responsibility in this world that God has laid upon us is to seek after our DEAD (Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith pg.356)
Although many Mormons are attempting to save their dead relatives, the Bible indicates: "None of them can by any means redeem his brother, nor give to God a ransom for him." (Ps. 49:7)
FACT 9. To the Mormon, the ultimate test that Mormonism is true is an "inner feeling."
Mormons often refer to this feeling as a "burning in the bosom." They believe their scripture (Doctrine and Covenants 9:8) gives the best test for determining truth. This test reads: "study it out in your mind; then you must ask me [the Lord] if it be right, and if it is right I will cause that your bosom shall burn within you; therefore, you shall FEEL that it is right."
The Bible, on the other hand, tells us: "Study to show thyself approved unto God, a workman that needs not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth." (2 Tim. 2:15)
FACT 10. Mormon leaders demand total obedience regardless whether they are right or wrong.
The ward teacher's message for June, 1945, stated: When our leaders speak, the thinking has been done. When they propose a plan - it is God's plan." (Improvement Era, June 1945 pg.354)
Herber C. Kimball, First Councilor to Brigham Young, clarifies further: "But if you are told by your leader to do a thing, do it. None of your business whether it is right or wrong." (Journal of Discourses. vol.6 pg.32)
The Bible warns us in 1 Jn.4:1 "Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world."
FACT 11. Mormon leaders consistently attack the Biblical doctrine of Salvation by God's Grace through Faith alone.
In Apostle James Talmage's book, The Articles of Faith, twice he refers to justification by Faith alone as a "pernicious doctrine" and further declares "The Sectarian Dogma of Justification by Faith Alone has exercised an influence for evil." (pgs. 107 480)
The Bible responds: "Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ." (Rom.5:1)
FACT 12. Mormon Apostle Bruce R. McConkie has warned his people against a personal relationship with the Lord Jesus.
We cannot assume from the Bible that change is what God wanted in fact he gave Joshua
careful instruction as to what he expected in "the Book of Joshua!" God in several
chapters before this was giving revelation to Moses in the Exodus of what he expected of them!
God told Joshua study the texts and keep a close lifestyle to what he commanded Moses!
If Joshua at that time were to say "God I have a few other things to consider in several other books!"
Would have you have believed God would have wanted his word changed or made another provision for it to happen!
God says heaven and earth shall pass but his word shall never pass away! This is contrary to what Joseph Smith ascribed!
Opening the door for Christ to come in as a perfect sacrifice! Paul preached on Jew
and Gentile receiving the Gospels throughout Asia to the Churches! Which God gives as the truth behind why Christ died on the Cross for our sins! Joseph Smith then Delivers a new revelation that every religion except his new revelation was a false religion! Reading the word of God you can know that
God has no need of a new revelation, this would mean that he forsook his disciples and
the followers of Christ Jesus in his acceptance of a new religion! Why was what Paul preached not the inspired word of God?? I think Paul outlines wonderfully the message of Christ!
Mormonism: varies in certain areas of doctrine therefore it remains at odds with Christianity with no more explanation than this, if we change what we have we don't have what we had been given first! The forefathers warned us that the Gospel would be perverted into other messages and I certainly believe Mormonism to be unstable both in the verifiable
facts of its existence and doctrinally unsound in it's proposals!
KINGDOM OF THE CULTS
"MAZE OF MORMONISM"(2 part realplayer series)
by Walter Martin
Walter Martin is probably the most notable scholar in the world when
it comes to Comparitive Religions and their doctrines! Quite frankly he is
a leader in the field of knowledge about cults and their followings!
If you enter his website and click on the link "Maze of Mormonism" he defines
exactly what the Mormon faith teaches and why it is incorrect and in opostion to
sound Christian doctrine! Examine the faith and then decide what you believe!
GODTUBE (VIDEO ON WHAT THE MORMONS HOLD AS THEIR BELIEF SYSTEM)
Let's Continue with Doctrine!
Before I go any farther on Mormonism I wish to make several statements but this one will be first A common question asked of Christians who make an effort to witness to Mormons is: "Why are you attacking Mormonism? We never malign your faith, so why attack ours?"
The fact is, proving Mormonism to be a false doctrine is not an attack but a defense of the Christian faith. Joseph Smith, the founder of Mormonism made the first attack by claiming that all Christian denominations are an abomination in God's sight. http://www.towertotruth.net/Mormon/articles/mormonism_uncovered.htm
If a Latter Day Saint should ask you this question, you need only look as far as their own scriptures and to the words of their leaders for an answer:
Journal of Discourses 5:73--"When the light came to me I saw that all the so-called Christian world was groveling in darkness."
Journal of Discourses 8:99--"With a regard to true theology, a more ignorant people never lived than the present so-called Christian world."
Journal of Discourses 6:25--"What! Are Christians ignorant? Yes, as ignorant of the things of God as the brute beast."
Orson Pratt (Mormon Apostle)--"..all other churches are entirely destitute of all authority from God; and any person who receives baptism of the Lord's supper from their hands highly offend God, for he looks upon them as the most corrupt of all people" (The Seer, pg 255)
Heber C. Kimball (First Counselor to Brigham Young)--"Christians - those poor, miserable priests Brother Brigham was speaking about - some of them are the biggest whoremasters there are on the earth..." (Journal of Discourses 5:39
Another interesting few facts are that the Smithsonian Institute has found no corraborating evidence for any of the different places that Smith mentions in the Book of Mormon other than what is mentioned in biblical scripture but his tales in the America's have been refuted as false, The National Geographic Society stepped in to say that as a matter of fact they have now issued an official document on Mormonism that deny's they can find any truthful archeological evidence of it's existence of Mormon places people's and arrivals in the Americas as Smith has said.I'll cover some more of the particulars after you read on a bit!http://www.catholic.com/thisrock/1996/9609fea2.asp Mormonism (position on Abortion!)
A Mormon must have faith in God the Eternal Father, in Jesus Christ His Son who atoned for our sins as Savior and Redeemer, and in the Holy Ghost; believe that the gospel of Jesus Christ has been restored to the earth in these latter days; and believe that the priesthood keys of authority to direct the Church and perform the ordinances of the gospel are held exclusively by the President of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and no other.
A Mormon must sustain the President of the Church, his counselors, and other members of the Quorum of the Twelve as Prophets, Seers, and Revelators whose authority derives from the priesthood keys of authority; sustain the other General Authorities and local Church leaders as exercising properly delegated priesthood authority; and not support or belong to any group whose teachings or practices are in conflict with those of the Church.
To stand approved of God, a Mormon must live the law of chastity, pay a full financial tithe of ten percent, follow the dietary laws of the Church, strictly follow the dress code of the temple, be honest when dealing with other people, honor financial commitments to former spouses and dependent children, and attend Church meetings.Mormonism has no stated doctrine such as the likes of the "Nicene Creed" However the above statement of faith is taken from the Questions given temple entrance members as they apply for entrance into temple worship! only an average of 20% of members, give or take 5% margin for error are actually accepted into the Temple for worship however there are more than 100 temples in operation today and construction on several others in the world have started!
Mormonism is the fifth largest faith in the world with over 300,000 converts per year!
Let's look at the differences between Mormonism and Christianity
THE JESUS CHRIST OF THE MORMON CHURCH
Is He The Jesus Of The Bible?
Introduction
In answering the question, "Is He The Jesus Of The Bible?" I will primarily let the top leaders of the Mormon church and its teaching manuals answer this question.
Mormon Prophet's Jesus Christ
The president and prophet (the top man) of the Mormon church, Gordon B. Hinckley, made a very telling comment about Jesus Christ in a talk in Paris France on June 4, 1998. Pres. Hinckley said;
In bearing testimony of Jesus Christ, President Hinckley spoke of those outside the Church who say Latter-day Saints do not believe in the traditional Christ. No, I don't. The traditional Christ of whom they speak is not the Christ of whom I speak. For the Christ of whom I speak has been revealed in this the Dispensation of the Fulness of Times. He together with His Father, appeared to the boy Joseph smith in the year 1820, and when Joseph left the grove that day, he knew more of the nature of God than all the learned ministers of the gospel of the ages. (Church News, week ending June 20, 1998, page 7)
Note Pres. Hinckley's words, " The traditional Christ of whom they speak is not the Christ of whom I speak." Many anti-Mormons have been saying this for decades. The Christ of Mormonism is not the Christ of the Bible. What follows are more specific reasons why the Jesus Christ of the Mormon church is not the one I believe in and cannot be found in the Bible.
According to the Mormon Church The Spirit Of Jesus Christ Did Not Always Exist, He Had A Beginning
The first thing to understand is that the "God the Father" of Mormonism has not always been God. He also had a beginning, just as his son.
President Joseph Fielding Smith said: "Our Father in heaven according to the Prophet, had a Father, and since there has been a condition of this kind through all eternity, each Father had a Father" (Doctrines of Salvation 2:47)...President Joseph F. Smith taught: "I know that God is a being with body, parts and passions...Man was born of woman; Christ, the Savior, was born of woman; and God, the Father was born of woman" (Church News, 19 Sept, 1936, p.2). (Search These Commandments, Melchizedek Priesthood Personal Study Guide, Copyright 1984 by Corporation of the President of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, page 152)
As shown in this chapter, our Father in heaven was once a man as we are now, capable of physical death...he and our mother in heaven were empowered to give birth to spirit children... (Achieving a Celestial Marriage, Copyright 1976, 1992 by Corporation of the President of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, page 132)
All men and women are...literally the sons and daughters of Deity...Man, as a spirit, was begotten and born of heavenly parents, and reared to maturity in the eternal mansions of the Father, prior to coming upon the earth in a temporal [physical] body'....very person who was ever born on earth was our spirit brother or sister in heaven. The first spirit born to our heavenly parents was Jesus Christ...Our spirits resemble our heavenly parents although they have resurrected bodies. (Gospel Principles, page 9, 1981 edition, page 11, 1997 edition)
What this means is that while "God the Father" was progressing to become a God, the spirit of his son, "Jesus Christ," did not exist. Only after the "Father" became a god was he able to procreate the spirit of his son. Now let us look at how the body of the Mormon Jesus came about.
How Was The Body Of Jesus Christ Conceived In Mary?
How Did Mary Conceive Jesus Christ According to the Mormon church and its top Leaders? Let us see how "God the Father," according to the Mormon Church and its top leaders, used his parts and passions to procreate the body of the Mormon "Jesus Christ."
When the Virgin Mary conceived the child Jesus, the Father had begotten him in his own likeness. He was not begotten by the Holy Ghost. And who is the Father?...Now remember from this time forth, and forever, that Jesus Christ was not begotten by the Holy Ghost. I will repeat a little anecdote. I was in conversation with a certain learned professor upon this subject, when I replied, to this idea--"if the Son was begotten by the Holy Ghost, it would be very dangerous to baptize and confirm females, and give the Holy Ghost to them, lest he should beget children, to be palmed upon the Elders by the people, bringing the Elders into great difficulties." (Journal of iscourses, Brigham Young, 1:51-52, April 9, 1852)
On other occasions Brigham Young said:
We first begin to read that Jesus came in the flesh...But suppose I examine that, a moment. The New Testament tells me that the Father gave His only-begotten Son a ransom for the sins of the world. Do you believe that, brother B.? Do you believe that Jesus Christ is the only-begotten Son of the Father? "Yes." Do you believe the Son was begotten by the Father, as the Apostles said he was? Here I shall have to disagree with you, to begin with; for I believe the Father came down from heaven, as the Apostles said he did, and begot the Saviour of the world; for he is the ONLY-begotten of the Father, which could not be if the Father did not actually beget him in person. (Journal of Discourses, Brigham Young, 1:237-238, July 24, 1853)
...The man Joseph, the husband of Mary, did not, that we know of, have more than one wife, but Mary the wife of Joseph had another husband... The very babe that was cradled in the manger, was begotten, not by Joseph, the husband of Mary, but by another Being. Do you inquire by whom? He was begotten by God our heavenly Father. (Journal of Discourses, Brigham Young, 11:268, August 19, 1866)
These are interesting statements, because if we accept them we would also have to believe that the Father committed incest. The Father according to Brigham Young took one of his spirit daughters as his wife and procreated the body of Jesus Christ with her. I find this offensive. Are these isolated teachings only by Brigham Young? No, they are not. Now let us learn what another president and prophet of the Mormon Church said while speaking to children at an official meeting:
A MODERN PROPHET'S ANSWER...I want the little folks [children] to hear what I am going to tell you. I am going to tell you a simple truth, yet it is one of the greatest truths and one of the most simple facts ever revealed to the children of men.
You all know that your fathers are indeed your fathers and that your mothers are indeed your mothers - you all know that don't you? You cannot deny it. Now, we are told in scriptures that Jesus Christ is the only begotten Son of God in the flesh. Well, now for the benefit of the older ones, how are children begotten? I answer just as Jesus Christ was begotten of his father...Now my little friends, I will repeat again in words as simple as I can, and you ask your parents about it, that God, the Eternal Father, is literally the father of Jesus Christ. (Joseph F. Smith, Box Elder Stake Conference Dec 20, 1914 as quoted in Brigham City Box Elder News, 28 Jan, 1915, pp.1-2.) (Family Home Evening [Manual], Personal Commitment, copyright 1972 by Corporation of the President of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, pages 125-126).
Note in the first paragraph of this reference the phrases "I am going to tell you a simple truth," "one of the greatest truths" and "simple facts ever revealed to the children of men." In other words what is said is truth and revelation. Note that the person speaking was the president of the Mormon Church and he was speaking at an official meeting. This was not just his personal opinion. On page 126 of this last reference, a teaching manual published by the Mormon Church, is a graphic picture of an algebraic equation:
Daddy + Mommy = You
Our Heavenly Father + Mary = Jesus
(Ibid, page 126).
Another LDS teaching manual has:
...he was able to make payment because he lived a sinless life and because he was actually, literally, biologically the Son of God in the flesh. (Messages for Exaltation, For the Sunday Schools of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Gospel Doctrine Class, published by the Deseret Sunday School Union, printed by Deseret News Press, 1967, pages 378-379)
Apostle Orson Pratt, in his publication, The Seer, expressed a similar idea.
God, the Father of our spirits, became the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ according to the flesh....it was the personage of the Father who begat the body of Jesus...both the spirit and body of Jesus were begotten by the Father... The fleshly body of Jesus required a Mother as well as a Father. Therefore, the Father and Mother of Jesus, according to the flesh, must have been associated together in the capacity of Husband and Wife, hence the virgin Mary must have been, for the time being, the Lawful wife of God the Father. (The Seer, by Apostle Orson Pratt, October 1853, Vol. 1, No. 10, p. 158)
Another said:
President Ezra Taft Benson stated, "The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints proclaims that Jesus Christ is the Son of God in the most literal sense. The body in which He performed His mission in the flesh was fathered by that same Holy Being we worship as God, our Eternal Father. Jesus was not the son of Joseph, nor was He begotten by the Holy Ghost. He is the Son of the Eternal Father!" (Benson, p. 4). (Encyclopedia of Mormonism, Vol. 2, p. 725, 1992; The Teachings of Ezra Taft Benson, p. 7)
Ancient and modern scriptures use the title Only Begotten to emphasize the divine nature of Jesus Christ. Latter-day Saints recognize Jesus as literally the Only Begotten Son of God the Father in the flesh (John 3:16; D&C 93:11; Moses 6:52). This title signifies that Jesus' physical body was the offspring of a mortal mother and of the eternal Father (Luke 1:35, 1 Ne. 11:18).
WHAT GOD OF THE HOLY BIBLE SAYS!!!
Scripture that we can study out of the Holy Bible that shows us that God absolutely is in opposition with Mormonism and
the teachings it ascribes! What we find is that Mormons are calling something that has Christian characters Christianity
yet the core foundation of Christianity remains rooted in what the bible declares and that is a contradiction to what the prophets of Mormonisn have espoused! So dangerous is this philosophy declare some scholars that only those who choose to examine what the other Doctrines of Mormonism profess that some will be lost due to the lack of truly examining Mormonism in light of God's word!(The Holy Bible)
