1. One word: Albacore! We've going through several weeks of the bite's on and then off, and then back on again. There's a big bunch of fish here today and then gone tomorrow. Well, if you've been waiting for the main run with consistent fishing day in and day out, it's here. The Wednesday dock count in San Diego was sure to be over 1,000 longfins for the first time this season. Most boats reported in with limits by 8 a.m. Even the Los Angeles and Orange County boats are starting to send out boats. Most of the fish are 12 to 16 pounds, but there are more and more 20 to 25 pounders each day -- a good sign we're well into the run now.
2. The Salton Sea corvina bite has just continued to get better and better. Most anglers this week are reporting pretty easy limits, especially off the east shore from North Shore to Bombay Beach, but fish are showing all around the sea. And the quality is still excellent with a lots of fish over 12 pounds. Few under 8-0. Live tilapia, mudsuckers, and the new Storm swimbaits have been the best baits -- from shore, float tube, or boat. The North Shore marina is back open, too.
3. The barracuda bite on the Huntington Flats and in Santa Monica Bay has been nothing short of spectacular in recent days. Most boats are getting limits of nice fish, and I don't care what you might hear from some people, barracuda are great on the barbecue, especially fresh. The bite has been mostly on iron, surface or yo-yo, so No. 3 and No. 5 Fire Iron-type jigs in blue and white, chrome, or green and white are resulting in limits.
