Brief description
The lightsabre is a self contained unit approximately 12" (30cm) in length. It would seem to include its own power source, which may be capable of extended periods of use (and storage) without recharge. It produces a powerful cutting blade of just over a metre in length, which can cut through ALMOST anything, but not without some resistance (especially by particularly dense and conductive materials - such as Lord Vader's armour.)
The Blade - a broad description
Upon activation, an energy 'blade' extends outward in a straight line for a length of 3-4' (100+cm). The blade is a tightly coherent and OPAQUE rod, with a slightly rounded 'tip'. This 'core' rod is about 1" (2.5cm) in diameter - about the thickness of an adult males' thumb. There may be an even smaller 'cutting core' within this, which might explain the almost invisibly thin cuts made by Luke's sabre during the fight in the Dune Sea. A considerable amount of glow flares out from the rod in all directions. This glow dies out very quickly as you move further from the core, and a lightsabre is of no practical use for lighting an area. When swung about, the blade seems to occupy far more space than it really does, due to the residual phosphorescent image left on the human eye by the passage of such a brightly lit object.
Lightsabres seem to be able to hold their charge for many many years. It is a crucial clue to StarWars technology that such power can be generated from such a small device! Anakin's sabre was fully functional after ObiWan dug it out from the bottom of his old trunk, presumably after almost 20 years of disuse! More interestingly, Lightsabres hilts are NOT HOT! When Luke drops his lightsabre into a pile of snow in the Wampa's lair, it does NOT melt its way down through the snow, it sits up happily on pile of freezing snow. Whatever power source it uses does not generate any heat in the stand-by state, which contradicts our terrestrial understanding of generators. If the 'generator' were simply 'off' then it is able to come online faster than anything our engineering principles can comprehend! The only other solution is that it has a sort of battery, or storage device (an idea supported perhaps by references to a "power cell"). If so, it holds IMMENSE charge, and can sustain it for DECADES! This is high-tech stuff!
So What CAN we say about the blade?
This energy blade employs principles not known to current terrestrial physics. It would seem that it consists of particles whose motion and behaviour can be somehow constrained. It is the nature of this blade, and of the mechanisms that generate & control it, that is highly controversial. These questions have been treated in the most lackadaisical and inconsistent manner by apocryphal writers, and 'official' sources have made little or no effort to rectify this situation. As a result, many (mostly younger) fans have a very skewed understanding of lightsabres - preferring to believe what Kevin J Anderson tells them, over the evidence of their own eyes.
What it is NOT.
It is very difficult to make any sort of definitive statement about just what a lightsabre IS ... because our terrestrial physics has no knowledge of such phenomenon, and also because there is such a wide divergence in the licensed descriptions sold by lazy researchers.
Perhaps it would be better simply to say what it can DO - and what it is NOT ... but the broad spread of misinformation means we really must try to find a good explanation - or at least narrow it down to a small number of good contenders (as this page tries to do, below).
A good place to START however, is still to define what the lightsabre is NOT ...
NOT AN OPTICAL PHENOMENON
A further clue to the nature of lightsabres is their seemingly 'material' interaction. They are opaque to blaster bolts! A true laser beams can readily pass straight through another, and a lump of plasma can be easily passed through a laser beam without hindrance. These blades are not JUST LIGHT. The blades may not pass through one another either. They not only block the passage of one another, but seem to 'cling' and interact with considerable amounts of waste energy thrown off as sparks, noise and light bursts.
It must be stated here that the lightsabre is NOT simply a 'laser' sword. You must DISCARD the OPTICAL models of lightsabre physics. If you have strong feelings about the (largely apocryphal) use of words such as 'lens' and 'focus' - then you will learn, as you read on, that there are NON-OPTICAL mechanisms that can still be described with these words!
The nature of light itself is not fully understood by terrestrial physics, and there may be aspects of light that ca be employed in a sabre blade - HOWEVER, the sabre blade is NOT the product of mere reflection, refraction or other mundane optical techniques. It is NOT a laser-beam!
