It's a World War II story if you were wondering...
"Don't go in the war, please don't go I love you!" She cried. JC kept his mouth firm, it was hard to stand there before his wife and say that he might leave her forever.
"Lillian, I'll be fine. And if I die I die in honor."
"I don't want you to die, what about Samuel?" He was upstairs sleeping, their proud boy of six. She collapsed on the bed crying her heart out.
"I'll be back for you and him. I promise." He sat next to her and wiped away the tears. She was a young mother and this would strain on her a lot.
"Just be with me this one night." Her lips quivered and her voice was uneven.
They sat in his truck in silence, he was going to the army base and be recruited to fight in the war. He kept looking over at his young wife of 27. She watched the scenery and didn't talk about him leaving. It was clear she was in pain.
"I love you and Samuel and I'll do anything in my power to come back."
"You owe me this."
"Yes I do." A tear fell down her cheek, she tried her best to be optimistic.
The war was hard, he wish he could send more letters. He tried to watch his back to be there for Samuel when he needed him. He ran into Justin Timberlake who was cheerful. He was 23, he had an unlit cigar in his mouth. He boasted about his young wife, Jenny, back at home. They talked, they grew up in a small town together. The next day they were nearly ambushed. JC heard screams in the first aid tent. He felt so lucky to survive but he thought of all those men, bleeding, screaming, scared. The screaming in the tent soon stop. JC looked inside, there was a lot of noise going on about losing a young boy. Then he saw the face. The curls were bloody and dirty as was the face. It laid there lifeless, blood everywhere. A shot in the chest and twenty minutes later the young Justin Timberlake was dead.
Only two letter's in the past tree months. Samuel is growing up beautifully. Jenny is around more now. Lillian dared not to say anything to her about Justin. She commented that he hadn't sent a letter in a long time. Lillian couldn't help cry when she was alone. Jenny was only 21 and pregnant with their first child. It was going to be hard for her when she found out her husband died. Times are hard now. Lillian did her best to be strong, Samuel needed her, they needed each other. He inherited his father's icy blue eyes. She pat her stomach, they were blessed with a second child. She froze every time the phone rang, it turned her face white. She was petrified of losing JC. Jenny went on not realizing he husband was dead. This killed Lillian, but she thought of losing JC the same way.
The months passed slowly. She prayed everyday he would return safely, soon the letters were shorter and they came less. His tone kept sound even more pessimistic. She kept hoping the next phone call wasn't about him. She gave birth to a girl who she named Hope. Hope had her father's eyes and her mother's looks, the most beautiful baby on the block. Jenny gave birth to a little boy she named Justin after his father. She called him Junior. She also received the sad news. The war seems to make people sad in the states, no one can seem to smile like they used to. Lillian prays for the next letter.
Being less innocent as they war continues, JC decided he wouldn't share any of the horror he's seen. He wanted so badly to come home but stayed. He met some nice guys, Joey Fatone and Chris Kirkpatrik. They talked about their wives and kids. Joey had six and Chris had two. They missed their families so much, especially Joey. JC thought he would try to see that Joey made it out, it would be tragic to leave a woman alone with six kids.
A horrible attack. JC met a southerner named Lance, he owned a tobacco business in Mississippi and had three kids. The four became close but they all dealt with the sadness alone. When JC wouldn't touch food, they made him eat, forced it in him. They all admit it's getting bad.
Lillian heard the news on the radio. The war was over! Celebrations and parades went nonstop throughout the city. World War II was finally over. Lillian couldn't wait to see JC. Hope is about five and she looks so beautiful with her brown curls and blue eyes. Everyday she woke up early to wait next to the window. The days gotten slower, her hope dwindling. On one Saturday the news went around that the survivors were coming. Lillian woke up extra early to catch him coming on their lawn, smiling his mischievous smile. She couldn't stand waiting inside and sat on the porch. She saw a black car drive down the street. A man stepped out, she thought he was coming to their house but instead went up to another. She saw a woman hug him tightly and they kissed. Her eyes began to fill with tears. Her heart ached for him more now than ever. Another black car came but pulled closer to their house. Two feelings control her, happiness and fear. She saw a short man step out. He wasn't JC.
"Are you Lillian?" He asked taking off his hat.
"Who wants to know?" She said uncertain.
"I'm Joey Fatone, I was in the war with your husband ma'am." Her heart cried.
"Please come in." He nodded and followed her into the dining room.
"About your husband-"
"Is he dead?" She needed to make sure. The pain killed her.
"Yes." She breathed heavy, she began to weep. He got up quickly and held her for support. Hope walked in the room.
"Mommy what's wrong? Why are you crying?" She asked.
"Nothing sweetie. Go play with Jo in your room." Hope obediently went in her room and played with Jo the doll.
"I'm so sorry for your loss, but I came to talk to you about that." She sat at the table wiping her eyes.
"Please I would love to hear anything about him."
"Well we met at a small camp, we became friends quickly. He told me of you a lot, and his son. He was a fine lad and he loved you two dearly, I wish I hadn't-"
"Hadn't what?" Her heart seemed to stop.
"Told him of my six children. He protected me from that point on. We met a Chris Kirkpatrick and a Lance Bass, the four of us became buddies. I remember that day clearly, I will never forget him." A sad tear made way down his cheek. "We were on our way to France. The Germans attacked. The shot was meant for me, but he took it, straight through the heart. Before he died he told me to give this to you, he said it was important you get this." He pulled out a necklace, leather with a lion head charm. Her shaky hands took it from his. It was the one she gave him on his birthday, the first on they ever shared. She cried.
"I think your husband is a brave man, he loved you very much. I'm sorry. I'll be in New York with my kids. I'll never forget him, I'm alive today for them because of him." He bowed his head and headed for the door. She stared at the piece of metal in her hands. It would be a great gift for Samuel, but when he's older. Hope came in the room.
"Who was that?" Her sweet voice asked.
"Someone who knew Daddy." Lillian placed Hope on her lap. "You want to know a story about him?" Hope nodded. Lillian wiped away her last tear.
"Well, when Samuel was just about your age..."
