Materials: 1/16" Basswood; modeling compound for head; spring from cartridge ball point pen; paper clip; map pin(pin with ball); hinge.
Directions: This piece is prepared in stages.
1. Mold a head for size and shape. Before head hardens,
insert one end of spring up into neck area. The head should be about 1/2" in diameter. Color head a light pink. Add rosy cheeks, red lips, black eyebrows and eyelashes. Two black mustard seeds or beads are glued into eye sockets. Hair is acquired by shearing small pieces of yarn or wool and applying to glued surface of head. Add red felt hat to top.
2. Cut out pattern parts A-D from basswood.
A. Cut out two pieces 3/4"x1" (Sides)
B. Cut out two pieces 11/16"x1" (Front and Back)
C. Cut out two pieces 3/4"x13/16" (Top and Bottom)
D. Cut out one piece 5/8"x5/8" (Inside Stand)
Gouge out small area in center of stand (D). Glue other end of spring into center, securing well with glued cotton. Let dry well.
3. Glue four sides together (A and B). Glue on bottom (C).
4. Paint outside of box and all of cover.
5. Adhere catch (made from paper clip) to and through top of cover(C) and insert (Glue) pinhead through front on (B).
6. Using a good hinge, glue to back and top cover. Make sure catch works. Dry very well.
7. Glue stand with jack into bottom of box(Jack's head should be sticking up).
8. Add some painted decorations or decoupage a cute picture onto the front.
