Comments:
Henry served from Feb 23 1864 to Aug. 23 1865 or 1 year and 6 months. His enlistment papers very clearly place his birth in Schuylkill Co. and his home as St. Clair at time of enlistment. He spent 2 months at Dismounted Camp. Based on his age at enlistment, Henry was born in Oct 1847. It should be noted, however, that his age shown on the Muster-out roll is 17. The 1850 Census records for Schuylkill Co. Pa. do not list James (his father) and family. I have viewed the entire 2-roll set for 1850. In the "History of the Seventh Cavalry published circa 1905, Henry is listed as the 136th of 215 enlistees in Company I. His residence at that time is listed as Soldiers Home, Hampton VA.
I checked the Hampton VA. log at the National Archives in Washington and the Henry Simmers listed was from the 106th Ohio Regiment. This needs further checking. Revised Oct 6, 1996.
