Comments:
Charles served from Sept 15 1862 to July 24 1864 or 1 year, 10 months and 9 days. He apparently got into trouble at Dismounted Camp Stoneman in Washington D.C. from which he deserted July 24 1864. The "Descriptive List of Deserters" lists Charles as born in Germany and enlisting in Pottsville. He was in the same Company and Regiment as his brother Joseph. Based on his ages of 28 on Sept 15 1862 and 30 on June 16 1865, Charles was born between June 17 and Sept 14 1834. The 1850 Census records for Schuylkill Co. Pa. do not list James (his father) and family. I have viewed the entire 2-roll set for 1850. Revised Oct 7, 1996.
