Robert May Simmers, was in the Company A, 53rd Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteers under Colonel John R. Brooke commanding. He enlisted August 13, 1861 when he was fifteen years old. He served 3 years at the front and returned in December, 1864. He was wounded at the Battle of South Mountain on September 14, 1862 and captured at Bull Run, but being naturally shrewd, managed to elude the rebels and escaped. He participated with distinction in the battles of Williamsburg, siege of Yourtown, Fair Oaks, Gaines Mill, White Oak Swamp, Seven Days' Fight, Malvern Hill, second Fredericksburg and several others.
While I don't have his actual Military Papers, I do have pictures of him and many newspaper articles about him. He was a very prominent citizen of Chester County, PA and actually retired at Pure Food Agent in the Philadelphia District for the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture.
