I originally wrote this song out of frustration with political correctness and revisionist history which said that many of the men I grew up admiring- George Washington, Abe Lincoln, JFK, Thomas Jefferson all had feet of clay for one trivial reason or other. Now, in light of the flak he's received due to his Rev. Wright dust-up, I dedicate it to a man I proudly look up to and who represents the best hope for this country- Barack Obama.
Used to be there was someone I could see
when I looked up
now it seems all those men with dreams
they just gave up
now all the heroes are homogenized
reality's knocked them down to size
gotta stop the one who even tries
to reach for the skies
CHORUS
Seems to be a new disease
all the good ones
crash to their knees
levelled just like clear-cut trees
Smashing effigies
smashing effigies
You know, it's really not them we're afraid of
it's really something inside ourselves
they say hero worship's something we made up
look to God, look inside yourself
Now all...
CHORUS
now there's only you, only me
no one else we'd like to be
but maybe it's enough, we'll have to see
when it's only you, only me
Now all...
CHORUS
