Here's an update (oct 1,2000)

We just got a letter from a lady...she took her best friend to the plastic surgeon for implants,

and after she took her home..she developed a fever and next day was taken back to the hospital.

They operated... opened her up
and she was full of PUS
and she DIED.

The friend wrote us and said she didn't know who to turn to...she didn't know anything about implants and she wanted to have the Dr.investigated...her dear friend was a charming wonderful woman.

I told her that it would do NO GOOD to investigate. that her friend signed a paper before the operation THAT SHE COULD DIE,GET INFECTED,ETC.It was hopeless and after she mourned to get on with her life.The Dr.was covered by the release form.

In 1975, I became one of the nations
youngest victims of breast cancer.

Since I had never been sick, that was a totally unexpected diagnosis.

The surgery that saved my life was a
radical mastectomy.

The surgeries that have destroyed my life began on
the day I walked into a smiling
Plastic Surgeon's office

and he said, "Don't tell me what I can't do. Let me show you what I CAN do for
you."The hour that followed was filled with slides of "successful" surgeries.

Each step of the way, I was shown the "new and improved" method of reconstructing a breast.

I was never shown or told the negative
side to breast reconstruction.I want to tell those of you who are contemplating a Latissimus
dorsi flap as part of reconstruction.

This procedure loosens the Latissimus Dorsi muscle
from your back, tunnels it under your arm, and then is tied into place on your chest to form a breast or a cavity to hold an implant.        

You may experience temporary paralysis on the effected side. I had to relearn how to use my hand and arm again. You may lose grip in your
hands that may be permanent.

You may experience numbness in some parts of
the arm, burning in others.

You may experience cold flushes to the face
from the pressure on the nerves.

You think you are having a stroke. Since that surgery in 1980, I have never had a pain free day in
the surgical site.

Bowling and golf had to stop as the strain across that incision caused a pain that put me on pain medications for three or four days.

I don't hold the grandbabies because I cannot depend on my arm.

I cannot hold my arm up for any length
of time, even to do my hair. I have dropped and broken things.         

In 1996, when I spoke with a plastic surgeon,he said he had done this surgery many times but had to admit he had "never stuck around to see the long range results".

The Latissimus Dorsi muscle has attached itself to either the ulnar nerve or the medial cord which
