Enter the Hawaii Sweepstakes and see the view from the Nu'uanu Pali Lookout, visit the Polynesian Cultural Center, go to a luau, visit the only Royal Place in the USA "Iolani Palace", hike Diamond Head, and windsurf at Lanikai Beach.

Mokulua Islands: The beautiful Mokulua Islands, commonly known as the "Twin Islands", are located about three quarters of a mile off the shore of Lanikai Beach. In Hawaiian moku means island, and lua means two. The names of these two islands are Moku Nui and Moku Iki. These islands are sea bird sanctuaries and are protected by the State Department of Land and Natural Resources. Please kokua “help” and do not disturb the birds or their nests.

Only Moku Nui is open for landing. Visitors are restricted to the beach so as not to step on the many seabird nests. This gorgeous island has a superb beach, an impressive double mountain, and stunning offshore views. Its somewhat smaller twin, Moku Iki, is almost its spitting image, but officially, landing on it is not permitted. They house many birds such as the Shearwater, the Petrel, the I’wa and other birds from the mainland.

But they also provide a destination for fun recreational activities such as surfing, kayaking, snorkeling and paddling. This part of the bay off Lanikai Beach features turquoise blue waters, coral reefs, and large sea turtles in their native habitat.

The coral reef in front of the Mokulua's is food for the fish and other animals as well as a shield for protection from sharks. The coral reef grows high enough so that no large predators can enter and cause damage.

Best way to get there, rent a kayak, you’ll find them at Kailua Beach which is located close to Lanikai Beach. There, they rent them as well as give lessons. Check out the winds before you go.

Surfing the channel between the islands is best done in winter; snorkeling, tidepool exploration and picnicking are prime summertime activities. Beware of the shallow coral reefs when the surf is up.

Nu’uanu Pali Lookout is an absolute don’t miss attraction. Overlooking the 985-foot cliffs of the Koolau Mountain Range, it is one of the most dramatic views of Oahu. Located at a low point in the spectacular Koolau Mountains, it offers a sweeping panorama of the windward side of the island. Try and be here on a non-cloudy day, it’s just spectacular. From here you can see Kailua, Kaneohe, The Kaneohe Marine Base, Kaneohe Bay, Chinaman's Hat, and Hawaii Pacific's Windward Campus.

It's definitely windy, and sometimes a little chilly, and the surrounding tall and rather forbidding peaks that surround the lookout show the wear and tear of centuries of harsh weather. But you have never seen so many colors of green in the beautiful vegetation and so many colors of blue in the Pacific Ocean.

To the right, Kailua Bay sits sparkling in the sun, inviting you to her balmy shores. To the left, Kaneohe Bay, one of the most picturesque settings in all of Polynesia (you must imagine it without all the touches of man), punctuated by four lovely islands, dotted with the billowing white sails of numerous sailing craft, underlaid with a beautiful barrier reef. All that is missing from this serene picture is a three-masted sailing ship anchored in the bay and Hawaiian canoes paddling out to greet them.

This vantage point, the Pali Lookout, stands 1,186 feet above sea level and commands one of the most dramatic views in the Entire State of Hawaii. This is the Pali, (pali simply means cliff in Hawaiian), which played a pivotal point in Hawaiian history. In the 1795 Battle of Nu’uanu, the invading Kamehameha drove the forces of the King of Oahu up to end of the Nu’uanu Valley where they reached the Pali. Somewhere between 400 and 10,000 warriors jumped or were driven over the edge of the pali, plunging to their deaths. The battle was won, and Kamehameha I gained control of Oahu, one of the final steps to the eventual unification of the Hawaiian Kingdom.

The Renaissance Ilikai Waikiki: Click here to see a picture and check out The Ilikai at www.islandsplendor.com/oahu/Hotel_pages/renaissance_llikai_waikiki.htm, it’s really nice and only about a half block from where we live. I can look out my front door and see it. It’s an oceanfront resort; The Renaissance Ilikai Waikiki is a classic deluxe hotel situated on the Yacht Marina on the edge of Waikiki. The Ilikai is known worldwide as the location where Hawaii Five-O filmed the famous opening shot with Jack Lord as Steve McGarret standing on the penthouse balcony. That’s a quote from their web page. We went to the 20th or 25th anniversary of Hawaii Five-O, I couldn’t remember which. I have a picture of Harv with McGarret’s car.

We go there a lot, mostly on Friday nights to see the Hilton’s fireworks. Every Friday night the Hilton Hawaiian Village shoots off fireworks, at this time of year, it’s at 8:00 pm. You can watch the fireworks right there from the Ilikai. We go out beyond the pool deck and sit and watch. Right now the Ilikai is in renovation but I don’t think it should bother you much. It’s one of my favorite places; in fact, I would like to live there. Not only do they have a hotel there they have privately owned condos. Every Mon, Wed, and Fri they have entertainment out by one of the pools from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm with Hawaiian music and hula. We haven’t been over there recently because Harv is working Monday through Friday from 3:00 pm to 11:00 pm.

The Ilikai features a variety of fine restaurants such as Sarento's at the "Top of the I" (a glass outside elevator takes you there), Canoes and Tanaka of Tokyo. When our daughter Kim and her family were here, the kids thought it was pretty cool to ride the elevator. We’ve had drinks at Sarento’s (beautiful night view of Waikiki), Harv has had drinks at Canoes, but we’ve never eaten at either.

I’ve eaten at the Tanaka of Tokyo there (I had the early bird special, it was ok) and we’ve both eaten at another Tanaka’s, we paid a little more but it was really good. It’s kind of fun, these restaurants have u-shaped tables with a master teppan-yaki chef at a center grill who cooks meals to order and serves them with a flair. Set courses include salad, miso soup, rice, shrimp appetizer and dessert, along with the entree.

Singha Thai & Pacific Rim Cuisine: Another really cool restaurant within a block of the Ilikai is Singha Thai & Pacific Rim Cuisine. Discover why Robin Leach ("Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous") named Singha "The Best Thai Restaurant in the World." Dine in an elegant setting, surrounded by Thai artifacts and orchids, while enjoying Thai and Pacific Rim creations of Chai Chaowasaree, owner of Singha and Chai's Island Bistro. Dinner served nightly from 4 to 11 p.m. with the Royal Thai Dancers performing from 6:45 to 9:00 p.m. 1910 Ala Moana Blvd. at Ena Road across the street from The Hilton Hawaiian Village.

This restaurant has won numerous awards as the best Thai eatery in town. Reservations are suggested, be sure to request a table close to the dancers. Entrees $20 or less. But check out the “Oahu Gold” and “This Week” magazines that you find in stands along the street and in your hotel. Currently “Oahu Gold” is offering a coupon for “Buy one entree and receive second entree of equal or lesser value free”. Here in Hawaii before you do anything, check out the magazines for coupons, they offer some real bargins. You can visit “Oahu Gold” online at www.spotlighthawaii.com.

If you go, we recommend the Sampler Pu Pu (Hawaiian for appetizer) Platter. Combination Appetizer Platter: Kataifi & Macadamia Nut Crusted Black Tiger Prawns with fresh pineapple, Alaskan King Crab Cake with fresh tomato & mango salsa, Fresh Ahi Katsu with wasabi, Thai curry sauce and Crisp Shrimp Lumpia. Plan to go between 7 and 9 pm so you can see the dancers, they really make the experience wonderful. Click here to see their web site at http://www.singhathai.com/. You will see pictures of the dancers, a tour of the restaurant, a menu, Thai music, and recipes. Harv and I loved this place.
La Mariana Sailing Cluba, Annette Nahinu, Tahitian Lanai Singers, Ron Miyashiro “The Piano Player”, Humphrey Bogart

The Lady of La Mariana rules last old-time tiki bar! One of our very favorite places to go for an unforgettable night of entertainment is the La Mariana Sailing Club. You won’t find any information on the La Mariana in your Waikiki magazines or hotel brochures on fun things to do and that’s just the way Annette Nahinu wants it. She told us so. Annette stops by every table each night to chat with customers. She really does. She’s very personable, interesting and interested, and quite wonderful. She seems genuinely sincere. She likes the local customers and the special tourists that have found about her place from savvy word of mouth. This place is special, a long ago Honolulu Magazine quote was it’s like the old “Traders Vic” of the 50s and you might expect to see Humphrey Bogart appear any minute.

This place has 5 Star ambience, atmosphere, and charm, wonderful people and a long history. The owner Annette Nahinu who is 86 years young and is almost always there and has been since the 1950s, even before Hawaii became a state. She recogninized that paradise was disappearing and has fought ever since to preserve a piece of it. "La Mariana, my maiden name, means 'the little sea' in Italian, which perfectly describes this place by a lagoon," says Nahinu.

When the much-beloved Tahitian Lanai closed five years ago, in 1997, many of the piano bar's regulars moved camp to La Mariana, joining the rattan chairs from Don the Beachcomber's, the balloon-fish chandeliers from Trader Vic's, and other remnants of Honolulu's long-gone South-Seas-kitsch nightclubs. All these artifacts, plus the karaoke piano player who once drew them in at the Tahitian Lanai, are now part of this Ke'ehi Lagoon establishment, along with an 80-slip marina, which Nahinu says has been open 365 days a year for 47 years.

Inside you will find Japanese glass balls hanging overhead in their nets holding multicolor lights and a waterfall is in the back. The most important thing you will find is the piano. Everything centers around this.

One of the big draws is Ron Miyashiro “The Piano Player”, who is blind but can play anything from way back to the 50’s to current pop tunes. He’s absolutely exceptional. He’s also really funny, one of his favorite jokes is: I can tell when my wife is mad at me, she re-arranges the furniture. He plays piano from 9 p.m. to midnight every Friday and Saturday at the restaurant. Another pianist, Soichi, keeps diners entertained 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesdays through Saturdays. But definitely go on Friday or Saturday to see Ron Miyashiro.

On Fridays and Saturdays the old Tahitian Lanai singers start showing up. These are not paid singer, they just come and sing and you don‘t get a better show than this. They’ve been together for 15 years or so, adding some and losing some. They all have their favorite songs and parts. They all come from different walks of life, from a teacher at Punaho to real estate sales people.

This is one of the last of the breezy, old-time Waikiki-style Polynesian piano bar and restaurants and it isn't even in Waikiki. The La Mariana Sailing Club is a hideaway on the edge of the sea half way between Honolulu’s airport and downtown Honolulu. Better get the address, since even your even friendly neighborhood cab driver may never have heard of the place. The address is 50 Sand Island Access Road and the phone number is 808 848-2800. If you are driving and you turn off Nimitz Highway on to Sand Island Access Road you will think you must have the address wrong because you are in an industrial area and think this can‘t possibly be right, then about three quarters of a mile off of Nimitz you will find a sign, La Mariana Sailing Club on the right, you turn in and you are in another world and another time. It’s a tropical haven; you are on the water with lots of sail and other boats moored in the docks. If you are in Waikiki and you don’t have a car, it’s about a $20 cab ride, the bus only goes to Nimitz and Sand Island Access Road so you would have about a three quarter mile walk and I wouldn’t recommend it, at least in the dark.

In the evening, bring on the strawberry margaritas and relax over sashimi (market price) and crisp, veggie-filled lumpia ($4.95) served with a fiery blend of vinegar, garlic and likely some of those Hawaiian chili peppers that caught Bazore's eyes more than 60 years ago. The lumpia is excellent but I wouldn’t recommend the nachos. Hours: Lunch 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. daily; dinner 5 to 9 p.m. Sundays to Thursdays, to 10 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays Cost: About $20 for two for lunch; about $30 to $40 for dinner for two without drinks

Most of the information here came from http://starbulletin.com/2001/05/20/features/eater.html, http://www.opinionatedtraveler.com/reviews/USAHAWAIIHONOJNT952.html and http://the.honoluluadvertiser.com/article/2001/Jul/16/il/il01a.html. Check them out, they’re cool!

Duke’s Canoe Club: The restaurant, popular with locals and tourists, is on the beach where the Outrigger Canoe Club once stood, with unobstructed views of Diamond Head and the ocean Duke loved. It is decorated with almost 15,000 board feet of koa, plus lauhala, bamboo, peeled rattan plaiting and natural-stone floors. The foods good too!

Duke's is a large restaurant with some seating partially outdoors by the beach and pool. Very much a grass-hut atmosphere, there is rattan and bamboo everywhere. This may not be the best place if you are sensitive to the heat, but if you enjoy outdoor dining, Hawaiian style, this is a great place. Photos of Duke Kahanamoku and frequent live music make this a great setting for lunch, sunsets, or evening dining.

Counteracting the rumor that Hawaiian music no longer exists in Waikiki, Duke’s offers free concerts on the beach on Friday, Saturday and Sunday afternoons, and the classy and classical Lilikoi Sisters often stroll among the tables at dinner time, performing Hawaiian classics.

The place to be on Sundays from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm is Duke’s to see Henry Kapono.
No cost, no cover, but is it ever packed. A better share of the crowd will be local and they know all the words to all the songs. It’s right out on the beach, have a drink and dance with all the locals. It’s really cool. Harv hates crowds so we never go into Duke’s while Kapono is there. We either sit out right in front on the beach or go upstairs to the Sunset Terrace. Get there before 4:00 pm and you can get a table right out on the Lanai overlooking Kapono playing. There you can sip a mai tai and enjoy the music but it’s not so crowded.

Go to http://www.henrykapono.com/pages/records.html to hear a little of Kapono!

Regular SUNDAY Performances at Duke's Waikiki every Sunday when Henry's in town! 4 - 6 pm

He also has a new night club at Aloha Tower Marketplace, we have not been yet. He makes regular performances at KAPONO'S most Fridays - Good Music, Good Food, Good Times 9:30 pm - 1 am

Paradise Awaits You At The Hilton Hawaiian Village
Your hotel The Ilikai is located next to the Hilton Hawaiian Village, although it’s about a block a way by foot. If you walk beachside, you first walk around a lagoon. Located on Waikiki’s widest stretch of beach, the Hilton Hawaiian Village® Beach Resort & Spa features lush tropical gardens, waterfalls, exotic wildlife and priceless artwork. As Waikiki’s only true resort, they offer you the Village Experience: a perfect blend of luxurious accommodations, over 20 restaurants and lounges, shopping, recreational and cultural activities, nightly entertainment and more! Pictured above is their Rainbow Tower.

Harv and I think the beach in front of the Hilton is one of the best in the main part of Waikiki, more sand and fewer rocks. It’s sometimes crowded but an excellent place for people watching. Be sure to check out the exotic village wildlife to see the penguins and maybe attend the Kings Jubilee at the Hilton Hawaiian Village. The penguins are so cute.

Exotic Village Wildlife
More than 60 species of exotic birds, waterfowl, turtles and fish make their home at Hilton Hawaiian Village ... even tropical penguins! Each weekday, enjoy watching the wildlife feedings (between 8 a.m. and 9 a.m., and again at 3 p.m.)

Some of the varieties of exotic birds you will find include: the African Red-Winged Flamingo, Black Swans, Sacred Ibis, Hawk-Headed Parrots, Ringed Neck Parakeets, Yellow-Crowned Amazon, Scarlet Macaw and Black-Footed Penguins. The colorful fish in our many ponds are koi (carp), bred in Japan for their beautiful colors and striking patterns.

Aloha Friday King's Jubilee & Fireworks
Every Friday night their Super Pool becomes the perfect tropical stage for Hawaiian entertainment and a beachfront Fireworks show. The color and pageantry of Hawaii's monarchy are brought to life in this regal tribute to King David Kalakaua, featuring the music, song and dance of the Polynesian Islands and the exciting Samoan Fire Knife Dance.

The show begins with the King's Procession, the Keiki Parade and Flag Ceremony and the Village Guards Precision Rifle Drill Team. The evening continues with Polynesian music, song and dance, featuring many of the Polynesian Islands' native dances and distinctive costumes. The grand finale of this evening is a stunning beachfront fireworks display that lights up Waikiki Beach.

Village Guards Precision Rifle Drill Team Show Schedule, 6:15 p.m. (October to March), 6:45 p.m. (April to September)

Main Show at the Super Pool (One-drink minimum for poolside seating), 6:30 p.m. (October to March), 7 p.m. (April to September)

Fireworks Display, 7:30 p.m. (October to March), 8 p.m. (April to September)
