--- Tip ---
With horses inside more in winter, wood chewing can be a problem. I have found by wiping iodine, sucj as you use on wounds, on the chewed areas, the horses seem to leave the wood alone, and the iodine darkens the wood, so I can easily see if they've been chewing again.
Thanks to Wisconsin Horseman's News and Melodie Pulvermacher for this tip!
*Note - iodine can cause stomach upset and adverse reactions in some horses and foals. Be sure to use sparingly.
This hint is very helpful for all year round, but especially in the winter. Instead of trying to open those buckets that have a lid every time you need to apply your daily wormer or any supplements, fill an empty milk jug with them. Use a funnel for easier filling and tie a measuring cup on the handle. Now with a quick twist, instead of a battle of the lids, just measure and you are done.
Thanks to WHC and Susan Berg for this tip!
Try making a inexpensive fly spray out of vinegar and water. If flys are becoming resistant to your normal sprays, then this also makes an excellent rotational spray, and is also good to use on sensitive skinned horses. Plus, if babies decide to chew on parts of mom (and they always do) you don't have to worry about them ingesting any types of sprays that may be harmful to them. |
