Nintendo Should Make 2D Mario Games Again
By: Eric Marcarelli
Nintendo should make 2D Mario games once again. No matter how good a 3D platformer is it could never surpass the simple, indescribable joy of an old 2D Mario Game. Gaming systems have grown to do amazing things, imagine a 2D Mario game for Game Cube
Think back to the last time you played a good old 2D Mario game (if you never have go NOW!), the sounds, sites, pure skill of jump and run (or walk and die if you prefer). The simple yet wonderful songs ringing in your ears as you race across the screen delighted. Always with a goal in mind the end. It may not be complicated, but it's FUN.
When I turn on a Mario game I expect fun, endless from start to finish, 2D delivers 3D do not. When I started Luigi's Mansion Christmas morning my hopes were high. At first I was satisfied, but soon a thought crossed my mind, "Who's paying me to clean this mansion??" I knew the point of the game was to save Mario but thats not what I felt, I felt I was working, not playing. A similar affect came from playing Super Mario 64
And of course in the resent Super Mario Sunshine, some guy is selling me shines. "If you have them
WHY NOT GIVE THEM TO ME SO I CAN SAVE YOUR ISLAND?!" A game, especially a Mario one should be fun, not work.
Gaming systems today are powerful; the Game Cube is no exemption. Just because it can produce complex 3D graphic doesnt mean it should. A game isn't made fun just by being placed in a 3D setting. What's wrong with the simplicity of 2D if it's more fun? Imagine a 2D Mario game for Game Cube for a minute
Done? Well, did you include wonderful Mario music, hundreds of classic levels, character changing, saving, and of course classic 2D game play strait from Super Mario Bros. 3 and Super Mario World? I did and it looked good. Would you really just buy a game because of its amazing 3D graphics while sacrificing great game play?
Nintendo should make 2D Mario games once again. When I sit down to play a game I expect fun not work, I get enough of that already. 2D has simple, fast, fun game play I'll never get enough of. 2D may have simple graphics, but it's better that way. Want great special affects? Why look towards games at all? Buy a movie. Want great game play? Get a 2D Mario game.
Nintendo should create those great 2D Mario games again. Disagree? Oh well, write a rebuttal.
