October 1999

1 The NHL opened its 1999-2000 regular season with the Dallas Stars defeating the Pittsburgh Penguins, 6-4, and the New York Rangers tying the Edmonton Oilers, 1-1. In Dallas, the Stars raised their first Stanley Cup championship banner and in Edmonton, the Oilers honored Wayne Gretzky in a special pre-game ceremony televised throughout North America.
2 The NHL's newest team and 28th franchise, the Atlanta Thrashers, played its first regular season game, a 4-1 loss to the New Jersey Devils at Philips Arena in Atlanta.
2 Boston's Ray Bourque moved past Paul Coffey as the NHL's all-time leading goal-scorer among defensemen by scoring his 386th career goal versus Carolina.
8 Chicago Blackhawks center Ed Olcyzk played in the 1,000th game of his 16-year NHL career.
9 St. Louis Blues center Pierre Turgeon recorded the 1,000th regular season point of his NHL career in a 4-2 victory over the Edmonton Oilers.
12 Florida Panthers right wing Pavel Bure tallied a goal and an assist to reach 500 career points in a 2-1 victory over Montreal. Bure recorded the point with an assist on Lance Pitlick's goal 5:33 into the second period.
13 St. Louis Blues center Pierre Turgeon recorded his 400th career goal at Detroit.
14 The Atlanta Thrashers won their first NHL game with a 2-0 victory over the New York Islanders. Goaltender Damian Rhodes made 20 saves to record his 12th career shutout.
16 San Jose Sharks center Ron Sutter played in the 1,000th game of his 17-year NHL career against the Washington Capitals.
21 Kevin Dineen of the Ottawa Senators played in the 1,000th game of his 16-year NHL career.
22 The Flames' Grant Fuhr became the sixth goaltender in NHL history to record 400 career regular-season victories in Calgary's 3-2 overtime win against Florida.
26 Phoenix Coyotes right wing Rick Tocchet played in the 1000th game of his 16-year NHL career in a 3-1 loss at Edmonton.
28 Boston's Dave Andreychuk (36 years, 29 days) became the sixth oldest player in NHL history to record four or more goals in a game when he netted four against Tampa Bay. Andreychuk's third career four-goal game tied a franchise record, joining 19 others, including Johnny Bucyk, who is the oldest player to score four goals in a game at 38 years, seven months and 24 days.
29 Center Doug Gilmour of the Chicago Blackhawks recorded his 400th career goal in a 4-2 victory against Detroit.
29 Defenseman Ken Daneyko of the New Jersey Devils played in the 1,000th game of his 17-year NHL career at Carolina to become only the third player to play his 1,000th game with his original club.
30 New York Rangers goaltender Mike Richter played in the 500th game of his 12-year NHL career, against the Montreal Canadiens.

November 1999
13 Detroit Red Wings left wing Brendan Shanahan recorded an NHL milestone 400th goal at Toronto.
18 Geoff Courtnall, who played 17 seasons in the NHL with Boston, Edmonton, Washington, St. Louis and Vancouver, announced his retirement. Courtnall recorded 367 goals and 432 assists for 1,465 points in 1,048 NHL games.
20 Veteran official Swede Knox became the second linesman in NHL history to work 2,000 games when the Detroit Red Wings played the Edmonton Oilers.
26 Detroit Red Wings center Steve Yzerman recorded his 600th career goal, making him the 11th member of the 600-goal club. Defensemen Larry Murphy played in the 1,500th game of his 20-year NHL career.
28 New York Islanders netminder Roberto Luongo recorded 43 saves in a 2-1 victory over Boston. The game marked only the fourth time in the 1990s that a goaltender recorded 40-or-more saves in his NHL debut.

December 1999
4 The Buffalo Sabres defenseman James Patrick played in the 1,000 game of his 17-year NHL career, facing the New York Rangers.
17 New York Rangers head coach John Muckler coached his 600th career game. Left wing Adam Graves moved into fifth place, ahead of Camille Henry, on the Rangers all-time goal-scoring list with his 256th and 257th goals while Theoren Fleury notched his 500th career assist.
22 Washington Capitals center Adam Oates played in his 1000th game of his 15-year NHL career at Vancouver.
23 Boston Bruins defenseman Ray Bourque appeared in his 1,488th game to assume fifth place on the all-time games played list, passing Wayne Gretzky.
31 Dallas Stars sniper Brett Hull tallied his 600th career goal, making him the 12th member of the 600-goal club and the second in as many months.

January 2000
3 Pittsburgh Penguins owner Mario Lemieux, Penguins general manager Craig Patrick and USA Hockey's Lou Vairo were named as recipients of the 2000 Lester Patrick Award, honoring service to United States hockey.
4 Los Angeles King's left wing Luc Robitaille played in the 1,000th game of his 14-year NHL career at Kiel Center in St. Louis.
6 Buffalo's Denis Hamel made his NHL debut, scoring a goal at 2:09 of the first period against New Jersey at HSBC Arena. Hamel became the fifth active player to score a goal fewer than five minutes into his NHL debut.
17 Marian Hossa scored 3:57 into overtime to give the Ottawa Senators a 4-3 victory over the New York Islanders at Nassau Coliseum. It was the 144th game of the season to reach overtime and the 60th that was decided, matching the overtime decisions for the entire 1998-99 season.
19 Boston Bruins defenseman Ray Bourque played in the 1,500th game of his 21-year NHL career, against the Atlanta Thrashers.
21 The Calgary Flames set an NHL record with their ninth overtime win of the season in a 5-4 win over the Nashville Predators. Calgary surpassing the previous mark set by the Winnipeg Jets during the 1987-88 season.
23 Toronto Maple Leafs' defensemen Sylvain Cote played in the 1,000th game of 16-year NHL career, against the Dallas Stars.
28 Brian Sutter of the Calgary Flames coached his 750th game when the Flames played Detroit.

February 2000
6 The World All-Stars defeated the North America All-Stars, 9-4, in the 50th NHL All-Star Game at Air Canada Centre in Toronto. The Florida Panthers' Pavel Bure became the 11th player in All-Star history, and the second European player, to net a hat trick. Bure added an assist, capturing MVP honors. Prior to the game the NHL retired Wayne Gretzky's #99 throughout the League in a special ceremony.
10 New York Islanders rookie Tim Connolly scored the winning goal in the Islanders' 5-4 overtime victory against Tampa Bay. Connolly became only the fifth 18 year-old to score an overtime goal in the NHL since the five-minute regular-season overtime rule was instituted in the 1983-84 season.
11 Colorado's Ray Bourque became only the second defensemen in NHL history to reach 1,500 career points with a first-period goal versus the New York Rangers. Bourque became the ninth player in NHL history to reach the 1,500-point plateau and the fourth this season, joining Detroit's Steve Yzerman and Carolina's Ron Francis and Paul Coffey.
16 New Jersey Devils goaltender Martin Brodeur was credited with the second goal of his career when the Philadelphia Flyers accidentally shot the puck into their own goal during a delayed penalty. Brodeur is one of only five goaltenders in NHL history to have been credited with a goal, and one of only three to shoot the puck the length of the ice and into the net.
22 This date marked the 20th anniversary of the 1980 U.S. Olympic Team's "Miracle on Ice" victory over the favored Soviet Union. That triumph, combined with the gold-medal victory over Finland two days later, generated a surge in hockey popularity and participation that, two decades later, has reached unprecedented levels across the United States.
26 Toronto Maple Leafs right wing Steve Thomas played in the 1,000th game of his 16-year NHL career.

March 2000
1 The Florida Panthers' Scott Mellanby played in his 1,000th game of his 15-year NHL career against Toronto, notching a goal. He is the 149th player in League history to reach the 1,000-game plateau.
4 Colorado Avalanche goaltender Patrick Roy climbed into second place on the NHL's all-time wins list with his 435th career victory, passing Hall of Famer Jacques Plante in a 4-1 win over the Tampa Bay Lightning.
6 After playing his entire 21-year NHL career in Boston, Ray Bourque's request to be traded to a Stanley Cup contender was granted. Bourque and left wing Dave Andreychuk were sent to Colorado for left wing Brian Rolston, defenseman Martin Grenier, center Samuel Pahlsson and the option of either a 2000 or 2001 first-round draft pick.
12 Dallas Stars head coach Ken Hitchcock became the fifth fastest coach to 200 victories when the Stars defeated the St. Louis Blues, 4-2.
12 Tampa Bay Lightning defenseman Petr Svoboda played in the 1,000th game of his 16-year NHL career.
14 A total of 12 trades, involving 23 players were made by NHL clubs at the trading deadline. The number of trades was the lowest since 1992-93, when nine trades were completed.
16 Members of the 1999 Stanley Cup champion Dallas Stars, led by captain Derian Hatcher, were honored by President Clinton in a ceremony in the East Room of The White House.
18 Florida Panthers right wing Pavel Bure recorded his fourth hat trick of the season, which included his 50th goal, when the Panthers defeated the New York Islanders 4-2.
19 Detroit Red Wings defenseman Larry Murphy appeared in his 1,550th NHL game, surpassing former Red Wing Alex Delvecchio to rank second on the all-time games played list. Murphy's 1,558 games played trails Gordie Howe (1,767).
22 Detroit Red Wings forward Pat Verbeek became the 28th player in NHL history to score 500 goals in Detroit's 2-2 home tie with Calgary. On that same night, St. Louis Blues defenseman Al MacInnis became the fifth defensemen to reach 1,100 points in a 2-1 victory over Carolina.
25 Florida's Pavel Bure scored two goals against Montreal, giving him and his brother, Valeri of the Calgary Flames, the record for goals by a brother combination in one season. Their 89 total goals broke the record of Bobby and Dennis Hull, who combined for 88 in the 1968-69 season.
29 Detroit's Sergei Fedorov scored his 300th career goal, joining teammates Steve Yzerman (600 goals) Pat Verbeek (500 goals) and Brendan Shanahan (400 goals) to reach milestones this season. It was the first time in NHL history that four teammates had recorded those milestones in the same season.

April 2000
1 Washington Capitals goaltender Olaf Kolzig played in his 269th career game, passing Don Beaupre for the most games played by a goaltender in franchise history. He also passed Beaupre for most career minutes played and most shots faced.
1 Calgary Flames goaltender Fred Brathwaite tied a 25 year-old Flames franchise record with his fifth shutout of the season.
2 The Detroit Red Wings honored Steve Yzerman in a pre-game ceremony recognizing him for reaching 600 goals, 900 assists, and 1,500 points.
3 Dallas Stars right wing Brett Hull scored his 610th career goal, tying his father, Bobby, for ninth place on the career list in a 2-2 tie with Calgary.
6 New Jersey Devils right wing Claude Lemieux played in the 1,000th game of his 17-year NHL career.
9 The Colorado Avalanche and Detroit Red Wings played the first penalty-free game in 20 years when the Avalanche defeated the Red Wings, 4-3, The last penalty-free game in the NHL prior to the Detroit-Colorado game was on Feb. 17, 1980, Montreal at Buffalo (a 2-2 tie).
13 Center Simon Gagne became the first Philadelphia Flyers rookie to score a game-winning goal in his first NHL playoff game and the third player in club history to do so, joining Karl Dykhuis on May 7, 1995 and Reg Leach on April 13, 1975.
25 St. Louis Blues center Jochen Hecht added his name to the list of notable rookie achievements in the 1999-2000 season during the Blues' seven-game Conference Quarterfinal series with San Jose. Hecht tied Pittsburgh's Jaromir Jagr as the post-season leading scorer with 10 points (four goals, six assists) in seven games.
25 The San Jose Sharks became the fifth No. 8 seed to upset a No. 1 seed in the Conference Quarterfinals since the inception of the current conference playoff format in 1994. San Jose's 4-3 series upset of the St. Louis Blues marked the second time the Sharks defeated the top seed, having ousted the Detroit Red Wings, 4-3, in 1994.

May 2000
4 Philadelphia Flyers center Keith Primeau ended the third-longest game in NHL history by scoring at 12:01 of the fifth overtime to give the Flyers a 2-1 victory over Pittsburgh in Game 4 of their Eastern Conference Semifinal series. The win tied the series at 2-2.
4 The Columbus Blue Jackets and Minnesota Wild signed their first players. Columbus signed Niagara University goaltender Greg Gardner and Minnesota signed forward Johnathon Gagnon.
8 The New Jersey Devils allowed only six shots on goal, the fewest in the playoffs or regular season since the league's expansion in 1967, when they defeated Toronto, 3-0, to advance to the Eastern Conference Finals.
9 Dallas Stars goalie Ed Belfour moved into seventh place in career playoff victories with 69 when the Stars beat San Jose. Belfour passed former Stars goalie Andy Moog, who recorded 68 with four teams.
11 The Columbus Blue Jackets executed the first trade in the club's brief history today, acquiring center Chris Nielsen from the New York Islanders in exchange for fourth and ninth round picks in this year's NHL Entry Draft.
12 Scott Gomez, Brian Rafalski, Brian Boucher, Simon Gagne, Brad Stuart & Mike York were voted to the 1999-2000 All-Star Rookie team. The voting was conducted by the Professional Hockey Writers' Association at the conclusion of the regular season.
27 NHL legend Maurice "Rocket" Richard passes away. Recognized as both an icon and an ambassador of the game, his legacy will carry forth for generations to come.
30 Game 1 of the NHL Stanley Cup Finals is aired on ABC's Jumbotron in Times Square for the first time ever.

June 2000
11 Jason Arnott scored in double overtime to give the New Jersey Devils their second Stanley Cup victory in six seasons. It marked the second consecutive Stanley Cup winning goal scored in overtime; last year being scored by Brett Hull of the Dallas Stars. New Jersey defenseman Scott Stevens was selected the winner of the Conn Smythe Trophy, awarded to the MVP of the playoffs.
15 Steve Yzerman, Jaromir Jagr, Brendan Shanahan, Chris Pronger, Nicklas Lidstrom and Olaf Kolzig were voted to the 1999-2000 First All-Star team. It was Jagr's fifth First team selection in the last six years.
15 Chris Pronger of the St. Louis Blues tonight became the first defenseman since Bobby Orr in 1972 to win the Hart Trophy as NHL MVP and Norris Trophy as the League's top defenseman in the same season. Other members of the Blues to win awards were Pavol Demitra, winner of the Lady Byng Trophy (sportsmanship and gentlemanly play); Roman Turek, who collected the William Jennings Trophy (goaltender on the club with the fewest goals allowed); and Joel Quenneville, recipient of the Jack Adams Award (outstanding head coach). 23 The Columbus Blue Jackets and the Minnesota Wild make their selections in the NHL Expansion Draft 2000. Each team was allowed to take 26 players from teams around the league with the exception of the most recent Atlanta and Nashville squads. The Columbus selections were highlighted by Rick Tabaracci, Lyle Odelein and Mathieu Schneider. Amongst the Wild's picks were veterans Mike Vernon, Chris Terreri and Joe Juneau.
23 With several new player aquisitions, Minnesota and Columbus started trading. Minnestoa sent Mike Vernon to Calgary for the rights to center Dan Cavanaugh and Calgary's eighth round pick in the 2000 or 2001 Entry Draft, at Minnesota's option. The Wild also traded Joe Juneau to Phoenix for the rights to center Rickard Wallin. They also traded goaltender Chris Terreri and a ninth round pick in 2000 to New Jersey for defenseman Brad Bombardir. Columbus acquired goaltender Jean-Luc Grand-Pierre, winger Matt Davidson and 5th round picks in the 2000 and 2001 Entry Drafts from Buffalo for future considerations. They also picked up New Jersey winger Turner Stevenson also for future considerations.
24 Calgary was the host of the NHL Entry Draft 2000. The New York Islanders lead off with the number one pick, and selected goaltender Rick DiPietro from Boston University. This marked the first time a goaltender was selected number one overall since Montreal chose Michel Pleasse back in 1968. The Atlanta Thrashers held the second draft slot and selected University of Wisconsin standout Dany Heatley. Rounding out the top three was Minnesota's selection of Marian Gaborik, an offensive star from Slovakia.
24 With draft day at hand, several trades took place. The Islanders were the most active team trading goaltenders Kevin Weekes and Roberto Luongo to make room for their top draft choice in Rick DiPietro. Colorado traded all-star defenseman Sandis Ozolinsh and a second round pick to Carolina for defenseman Nolan Pratt and a first round pick. Vancouver traded veteran winger Brad May to Phoenix for a conditional pick in the 2001 Entry Draft.
