| Just how did Green Day become the band they are today?Well I entend to answer this question as best I can.Which is not too well.There is a timeline at the bottom so you can read that if you find this boring. Billie Joe was born in 1972(the year all the band members were born) into a working class family in Rdeo ,California as the youngest of six children.Billie's dad was a truck driver and sometime jazz musicianwho died when he was ten .His mom was a waitress and diehard country music fan.Billie got his first guitar at age eleven,a blue Stratocastor,which he still plays today.Around this time he met Mike. Mike Dirnt,birthname Michael Pritchard,was born of a heroin addicted mother ,put up for adoption ,his adoptive parents divorced at age seven and he went to live with Billie at fiteen. Meanwhile ,Frank Edwin Wright III was growin up in Willits.He joined his neighbours band at age twelve ,named The Lookouts and adopted the name Tre Cool.The group released an album on Lookout Records. Billie and Mike formed a band named Sweet Children in 1987.They changed the name in 1989 to Green Day which is named after one of their favourite pastimes ,hanging out and smoking pot.John Kiftmeyer ,a.k.a Al Sobrante ,completed the lineup. In 1989 the band released "1,000 hours" they followed this up with "39/Smooth" which cost $600 to make.Kiftmeyer left after "39/Smooth" and was soon replaced by Tre Cool.Green Day kicked off a world tour the day after Dirnt graduated high school(Cool and Armstrong left school early) in 1990.The bands second real album ,"Kerplunk",was recorded in five days with a $1000 budget. Both of the two albums sold in excess of 30000 copies breaking Lookout records sales records.By this time Green Day had completed five American tours and two European tours.They travelled in an old book mobile. Green Day signed to Reprise records in 1993.They completed "Dookie" in five weeks.It hit shops in 1994 and sold more than 3 million copies in three months.After completing their own tour Green Day joined the Lollapalooza tour and Woodstock 1994."Dookie" had now surpassed the ten million mark. In 1995 they released "Insomniac" which sold a few million copies.Armstrong and Cool both became fathers the same year an Mike got married .They took a break after touring to promote "Insomniac".They released "Nimrod" in 1997 which spawned their highest selling single ever "Time of you life".They have just released "Warning" after a three year break. Ok heres a timline it has less information but you can scan it quickly if you dont want to read all that stuff that took me ages to type,lazy people that you are. 1972 - Bille Joe, Mike and Tre are born. 1977: Billie records a seven-inch single called "Look For Love." 1982 - Billie and Mike meet at school in Rodeo. 1987 - As Sweet Children, Mike and Billie play their first jig at Rod's Hickory Pit, where Billie's mom works. 1989 - Sweet Children become Green Day. 1990 - Billie quits high school. The band releases 39/Smooth. Their first U.S. tour begins after Mike's graduation. Drummer John Kiftmeyer leaves the band. 1991 - Tre Cool joins Green Day and takes John's spot. 1992 - Kerplunk is released. 1993 - Green Day leaves Lookout Records and signs with Reprise Records. 1994 - Green Day releases Dookie. They tour for ten months. Billie Joe marries his girlfriend, Adrienne. 1995 - Insomniac is release. 1996 - Mike married his girlfriend Anastasia in August.(They are now separated) 1997 - Green Day's latest album Nimrod is released. They won the Best Alternative Video Awards on MTV 1999 - Green Day is planning for their new album. 2000 - Release new record entitled "Warning". |
