Green Anoles:
INTRODUCTION
Anoles are great pets and because of their low cost and easy
keeping habits they make a great pet for a beginner or a
acompished reptile keeper. Anoles can change color from
green to brown and all shades in between. They grow up to 9 inches but the females tend to be
a little smaller. The males have a red to pink throat patch (or
dewlap) that when courting a female or when adressed with
another male the extend for all to see. Some females have a
dewlap too but it is not much more that a red spot on the neck.
FEEDING
Anoles eat almost any insect but most live on meal worms and
crickets which are easy to get at your local pet store.Do not get wild crickets! they may carry parasites.. Too
many hard shelled bugs (meal worms, beetles ect..) will cause
a digestive problem and could kill your animal. Twice a week I
dust their food with a mineral and vitamin suppliment that you
buy at the pet store. You just get a container in which you put
the food item and them you put in the powder and then its just
like mom's shake n' bake! MMMM!
THEIR HOME
Here
are a few suggestions to make your pet a little happier. And
when he is happier, he is healthier. And when he is healthier
he is more active and so more enjoyable for you. First of all
give them all the space you can afford or can provide. They
love to climb and the more plants and sticks you give them the
more they'll climb. Second give them a heat pad or heat rock
and/or a lamp. Third give them a hiding space. You can
probably buy a hide box at your pet store. If your animal does
not have a place to hide they will get stressed out and might
not eat and could even die. Keep them well watered buy
misting the cage moderatly with a spray mister. You will have
to have a tight fitting top because they can climb very well
HANDELING
Anoles are very skitish by nature and if picked up by the tail it
will fall off. The tail will grow back but not as long or as nice.
BREEDING
The best way to ensure breeding is to have one male and several females(lucky guy). Another good thing to do is to get a shallow(21/2 to 3 inches deep) margeine conatiner. Cut a hole about 2 inches across in the top so the female can get in. Put some moist(not wet)peat moss in there and the female will probably lay her eggs in there.
