Australia
While hemp is currently banned, gov't officials have permitted one farmer to grow hemp on a small-scale plot. Public support for hemp is coming around.
Austria
Austria has a hemp indusrty including the production of hempseed oil and medicinals.
Canada
In 1994, Canada issued its first license in over 40 years to Hempline Inc., which was allowed to plant 10 acres of industrial hemp in the providence of Ontario. Dozens of hemp manufacturers and retail stores, supported by hemp importation, are sprouting up across Canada.
Chile
Chile currently grows hemp mostly for hempseed oil, which is then processed by U.S. entrepeneurs into cosmetics, massage oils, and other products.
China
China has been growing hemp for at least 6,000 years, maybe longer. China is the world's largest exporter of hemp paper and textiles.
France
France harvested 10,000 tons of hemp in 1994. France is a mainsource of low-THC hempseed. French companies are also experimenting with combining hemp fibers with lime to make a lightweight natural cement that can also be used as a plaster.
Germany
Germany banned hemp in 1982, but research began in 1992 and many technologies and products are being developed. Germany lifted the ban on growing hemp in November 1995.
Great Britain
Great Britain lifted the prohibition of hemp in 1993. More then 30 farmers in England and Scotland have planted industrial hemp. Animal bedding, textiles, and paper have been developed.
Hungary
Hungary is rebuilding their hemp industry, and is one of the largest exporters of hemp cordage and hemp fabric to the U.S. They also export hemp seed and hemp paper.
Netherlands
The Netherlands conducted a four year study to evaluate and test hemp for paper, and is developing processing equipment. Seed breeders are developing new strains of low-THC varieties.
Poland
Poland currently grows hemp for fabric and cordage and manufactures hemp particle board.
Romania
Romania is the largest commercial producer of hemp in Europe, with 40,000 acres devoted to the crop in 1993. Most of the harvest is currently exported to Hungary for processing before its exportation to the west.
Russia
Russia maintains the largest hemp germ plasm collection in the world at the N.I. Vavilov Scientific Research Institute of Plant Industry in St. Petersburg.
Slovenia
Slovenia grows hemp for paper for exportation to the U.S. and manufactures currency paper.
Spain
Spain grows and exports hemp pulp for paper adn produces textiles and rope.
Egypt, India, Japan, Portugal, Thailand, and the Ukraine also produce hemp.
United States
The United States has not granted any hemp permits in over 40 years. Importers and manufacturers have thrived using imported raw materials. Twelve states in the U.S. have introduced legislation. Contact you local, state, and national representatives and lobby for your state and the United States to legalize the production of industrial hemp. Bug'em till they do it. |
