Pokemon Red and Blue Review
how awful it is

Now, I know about Pokemon Blue and Red. I’ve seen others play the game; asked questions with other people; even played the game myself (never buying it, of course) and I’d like to tell you about my thoughts on this piece of junk. Analysis comes in several parts:

Gym Leaders are on of the numerous problems with Pokemon Red and Blue. The fact that you have to battle with them to get badges is absolutely pathetic. How can battling a gym leader actually show your skill at raising Pokemon? It doesn’t! Demonstrating skill comes at unexpected times, when you’re suddenly attacked at random while going through wild grass, or meeting a Pokemon trainer without warning.

Special power-ups are the most problematic thing of Pokemon Blue and Red and the continuing sequels after that, Yellow, Gold, and Sliver. The use of power-ups, like potions, rare candy, “special” Pokeballs, the Pokemon flute, and stones demonstrate little if any skill. Rare Candy evolves a Pokemon to the next level, it can be duplicated, what skill do you exercise there? Potions to revive Pokemon, too, mean that you are not skilled to the point where you can use all Pokemon wisely to where you can get them to the Pokemon Center. The Pokemon Flute, too, is stupid; if you can put them to sleep, how do they put up a fight? What kind of skill do you need there? None, whatsoever!

Magazine Guides are probably the worst things to hit shelves, out of all the toys, games, stuffed animals, cards, and all the other things. Magazine guides cost very little—around five dollars, and they are a complete cheat. A cheating guide, needless to say. I’ve seen them before. You can just buy a magazine and the magazine does all the work while you just follow its instructions! They have pictures and step-by-step guides—skill, skill, is something not used while using these guides.

The special Pokemon, while giving the game more hype, can also destroy your game as well, in the worst of cases. Mew, Missino, and the other two Pokemon you can’t find when you pick that one, are the special Pokemon. The hype over Mew is practically all talk; nobody I know has ever caught a Mew during the game. You’re supposed to trade to get him, but doing that requires cheating from either Gameshark or from hitting the Internet. Worst, and the most malicious Pokemon, is Missino. Use it in battle, and it’ll reset your game, destroying the good of the cartridge. I’ve seen it happen before; a person’s game kept on restarting with the catch—and use—of Missino.

Gameshark is a cheating device that doesn’t even secure into your Game Boy Color right. You stick the Gameshark in the place where the cartridge will go, and then stick the cartridge in a little slot on the Gameshark. With this, you can get Mew, you can walk over trees and boulders (at least that’s what Lieutenant Sarge says), and you can get a Pokemon up to level 256. What are they trying to do here?

Cheats—cloning, candy, and more are the most stunning thing in Pokemon Red and Blue. Candy, or Rare Candy, can be duplicated; theoretically you can get a Pokemon up to level 100, if you ever bothered to. Cloning is another cheap part of the game. You access somebody’s PC, and when you make an exchange or something, they’ll say “SAVING…DON’T TURN OFF THE POWER” and then you do, and you’ve got a cloned Pokemon. Masterballs, the most power balls to catch Pokemon with, can also be cloned too, clearing the hurdles to catch the rarest Pokemon around. I mean come on that’s totally cheating!
